Multiple Instances (processes) of Google Chrome?

Ive been using Chrome for quite a while now (good few months), and I remember reading something about Chrome loading each tab in independently (as a seperate process) or something. But when I start up Chrome and it loads a blank main page, I see 7-8 processes in my Task Manager, is this normal? or how can I reduce these processes?

It’s all your extensions and stuff, they open separate processes in the background apparently..

I guess less plug ins and add ons would give less processes..
( I have 5 processes in Chrome for total of 130,000KB.
Only one in Firefox, but it is 235,000KB !)
