Help wanted with a movie in H265
August 4th, 2016
I have downloaded a movie: the extended version of The Lord of the Rings-The Fellowship Of The Ring that I really want to watch. It is a MKV-file with 1080p BRRip x265 (HEVC) DTS 6.1. This version of the movie lasts 3:48:18. But the mediaplayer I have to show it on my TV apparently does not show H265. And converting or even de-muxing does not work for this file.
So I am in need of true technical knowledge. Here is what I already tried myself. I first tried to convert it with Wonderfox Soft VideoConverterFactoryPro 8.6. But very strange: then the movie only lasts 2:15 hours: about 75 minutes ‘disappear’. They appear to be truncated. I tried several output formats, all with the same result…………..
Then I went looking on the internet. I found 2 programs called MKVToolnix V7.7.0 and MKVcleaver V0.6.0.7. And although I do not know about these things, with a few Youtube-videos I found out how to use them. When I de-mux the “Video Track <HEVC> (3:48:18:782)” and the “Audio Track <DTS> English 7 / 6 chans ” from the mkv-file with MKVcleaver, I get 2 files as expected: “…_Track01.dts” (2523 MB) and “…_Track00.undefined” (3315 MB). The de-muxing ends with a message saying it was succesful.
This “…_Track01.dts” is the sound file. It plays well and has a playing time of 3:48:18. So it is also complete. Fine so far.
The “…_Track00.undefined” should be the video file. But the file extension already is an indication something is wrong. And sadly, it does not play. And it seemss unusable for anything else.
Can anybody help me to get this movie into a format (like ‘regular’ MKV) that I can show on my TV?
Thanks in advance!
Weird indeed.
Can you even play it on your PC. – downloaded file.
What’s the file extension.
Did you tried to use Handbrake. – if your TV doesn’t support x265 but does support x264 you can set that up in handbrake.
A Google says this one will do it..

You trying to play it with a stand alone media player?
Probably be easier and quicker to redown it in the correct format..
Thanks for your replies, guys!
, I never heard of “Handbrake” before, but a quick google learned me that this might be the trick. I’ll get it (apparently it is a free program) and try it out!
,
I did not try a stand alone media player, but the one that is built-in in my BR-player. That apparently does not know H.265.
If “Handbrake”does not work, I’ll try your suggestion (Pavtube Video Converter Ultimate V4.8.6) which I already downloaded. And if that still does not help me out I’m afraid your right when you wrote “Probably be easier and quicker to redown it in the correct format“.
But downloading all 3 ‘Lord of the Ring’ episodes took me a long time, so I hope I can avoid having to download another version….. Thanks again for your kind help!
I would think that it will be much easier for you to download a 720p version of the movie ( not the 1080 that you found) and it will be less trouble and faster to download since its not as big a file.
Unless your a true audio file, with the rights set up, you will not really notice a difference. You may have spent more time on this then you should, especially if you start the download before going to bed..
Otherwise just run from your PC and use the TV screen as a monitor, if it’s an option
Any video converter pro should convert it.
you need a codec in order to be able to convert or play h265. without it you will not get far with any converter. there are a few h265 directshow codecs available including lav or lentoid which are both free to use. Lentoid is meant to be the fastest but after trying it, it does have a few issues which might require some tweaking to fix. if it wasnt for the fact that it is meant to be fast, you would be better off using lav. however it is going to take a long time to convert it to h264 so any speed up is worth doing.

be careful with this because it can, if your not careful, install a toolbar

Thanks for your replies, , and .
The “Handbrake” program worked, and it quickly converted to a working H264-file that I can play on my TV. The file is quite large, but I set some sliders to higher quality so apparently I got what I wished for.
If this would not have worked, I would have followed the advice of trying out several other “pro” converters or even (as a last possibility) re-download a lower-res version.
Thanks again for all your help!!!
