720P or 480p movies?

I have been downloading 720p movies but thought about switching to 480p so I can put them on a standard DVD and play them on my blu-ray player. Even though a 720p rip will fit on a standard DVD it will not play. Should I start downloading movies in 480p? Right now I have just been plugging the external hard drive directly into the TV to play my files. It plays everything except the bigger DTS audio files. Just looking for suggestions. Thanks!

I copy dvds using dvdfab so all of my rips are in dvd standard 480p
