xp installation
January 30th, 2020
Probably can’t read some files from the cd…in that situation I just burn another cd and try again…
It’s trying to install through DOS, switch to your cd driver (drive d: usually) and then type i386\winnt
It should then begin to install, slowly, but surely.
alright that got me trough my first problem. thanks. now i have another. it takes me to the windows setup window and ask for the route to the xp files so i type it in and it gives me a message saying the memory is full. i formated the hard drive but it didn’t help. any ideas?
t gives me a message saying the memory is full
um, specifics here.. does it actually say “memory”? as in memory is full? because thats reffering to the RAM (and virtual memory) suggesting that you dont have enough to facilitate the install.
It is unlikely the error would be that vague, what did it say exactly?
exact quote is “setup is out of memory and cannot continue”. the computer before it was wiped, had xp on it so i know there is enough ram.
Well it means exactically that, it’s out of space. Make sure you are formatting everything and then making a whole new partition. It should work, there’s no reason it shouldn’t…
Is this a FULL version of XP, or a lite/optimised version (Bullet, Black, SP3)?
A normal install of XP is done by booting the CD, calder dr-dos 7.03 makes me think it’s not a full version. If anything, you would get a MS-DOS error.
well the guy who set up my computer make a folder called install and made a xp setup folder with all the files he used so it should work. i have the full version on this computer so i would say its full. i know the hard drive on the other comp has nothing on it because i formated it using command prompt plus the people before me who had the computer wiped it to.
thanks for the quick responses
Have you entered you BIOS and set it to read from CD-ROM first on boot up?
i don’t know what that means. to be honest this is my first time working with a blank computer.
Reboot the computer.
Look at the screen (have to be kinda quick) and look for the “Boot Setup” or something similar (normally f1 or f12 – changes)
Look for a tab called “boot order” or similar, and rearrange the order so that the CDROM device boots ahead of the HDD.
When booting up the computer, you should be able to enter setup. Press “F12” (it’s usually this key when booting) when the PC is booting this should bring up your BIOS/Setup screen. Find somewhere on there the boot order of devices. Set the CD-ROM as the first device to boot.
alright so i made it so CD-ROM boots first it it still doesn’t solve my problem. it never goes directly to XP setup window. it starts setting up and then it gives me the error i said in my first post. then i tryed entering the Xp setup window using command prompt and it asks me for the location of the xp system files so i type that in at it tells me memory is full.
hmm i know why your getting this error message now.
The files you were given at the top you said, was it you who burned those to a disc?
According to this forum i found, you are getting that caldera dos prompt because whoever burned the disc did it incorrectly – the boot image of XP was not included, and instead the burning program created its own boot image using Caldera.

I think if you just downloaded another version of the OS and tried again, it should work.
well i have tried 2 different copies. 1 i got from rapidshare and the other was already on my comp. (sry for the late response. i fractured my neck over the weekend)
