X264 settings to have low file size and reasonable quality

December 12th, 2013

Hello.
What are the x264 encoder settings used by 300MB United team? I wish to encode videos on a Quad-Core 3.6GHz machine and am willing to wait even 10-12 hours for a single video to complete.
I’m providing the screenshots of the x264 encoder and request to please give me the settings to have maximum quality for lowest file size.

Thank you for your replies.

I m not sure bout this, but i belive they use megui – HQ Slower profile.
(it takes some time to encode, for me its like 3.5hrs, and on dual core processors its around 2hrs.) or even HQ slow (not much faster but with less command lines). Experiment with it, look at other people rips (especially Adzapper's, then compare to your own), maybe you find even better profile than HQ slower.

As for the detailed view, i would ask the uppers via pm. You could also try to check those settings yourself and find out whats the best result.
I used this profiles and i got allways a decent vid.

set preset to veryslow and tuning to film (or if your encoding anime or cartoons then set it to animation)
encoding mode to CRF and use CRF=26 for 480p
thats all or you can check my little site for additional infos

Yeah, the slower presets are probably your best option. I’m not entirely convinced you get much quality improvement between 3-pass and 2-pass encoding, but it can’t hurt.

I am sure google will help you…

Good tutorials on your site there j0x !
Maybe you should call it ‘Ripper Guides’ though, ‘cos I’m still trying to find your ‘Stash’

Anyone who uses a separate media player to playback your files won’t like you or your rips when you use AVC level 5.1 because it is not something many players like. 4.0/4.1 is the highest level most will play.
I think your concentrating far too much on settings and missing “other” things that 300MB united use to keep the quality high in small file sizes. There is a limit to the improvement that encoding settings will achieve. Look at the encoded resolution for a clue.
Have you tried looking at their settings in Mediainfo? I know that they were trying to prevent them being revealed in order to create the illusion of them having some magic but I don’t know whether they ever achieved it. x264 does automatically add the settings to the file header.

You must have poor eyesight if you think that those small encodes are quality. I get immediately put off by them.

They are certainly not to everyone’s taste. I don’t like small size videos as a rule although I do encode one small size TV release myself. I keep the quality as high as possible with very little in the way of video artifacts like I have seen in most other small video size releases. They are for people with slow internet connections or limited monthly bandwidth.

thanks, i called it stash in honor of animestash http://animestash.info/
and yes you cannot always get very good quality when it comes to ultra low bitrate encoding since not all videos have the same video complexity or in other words not all videos have thesame compressibility, a video that has more motion will need more bitrate and more bitrate equals to high filesize like those action packed movies like transformers movies, while videos that are low motion like only heads talking like those drama shows will only need few bitrate and thus it can be compress to low filesize in good quality
and i notice your using 2-pass (using 3-pass is just a waste of time) let me explain the 2 important encoding modes that x264 offers
2-pass at fix bitrate in all your encodes like 300kbps for example will always output thesame video filesize (at most) no matter what resolution you set but quality is uncertain
CRF at fix value in all your encodes at value 25 for example will always output thesame video quality (at most) no matter what resolution you set but filesize is uncertain
when your targeting a filesize (2-pass mode) then your guessing the quality
when your targeting a quality (CRF mode) then your guessing the filesize
you may ask why their is no such thing as targeting a filesize and targeting a quality at thesame time on every
video source? because every video source has this thing called video complexity what it means in simple terms
is that every video has different compressibility, i already elaborated it a while back

here you go ive been working with videos since 1992 i know everything about compressing videos ect here are the best compression setting for x264
import this into megui you can thank me latter
