Upgrading my videocard

January 26th, 2020

Hey all, i need your advice/help
I’m a fervent gamer and now in my exams, my videocard started acting really weird xD (artifacts in windows)
Now i was looking to upgrade my old HD3870 (first gen) card. But because the card also delivered some problems ingame, i’m gonne ask it here.
So the card gave me problems like black ingame screens and driver malfunctions ingame (COD4, AOE2, AOM, ARMA2, ….) and it was really hatefull when you were winning a match and suddenly you have to alt-tab because u get black screen. (updating drivers didn’t work).
So now i’m considering buying a 4770. It’s really cheap and it matches the 4850. Some friends told me to get the Nvidia GT265, but it’s almost double in price and i didn’t hear any good from that card either.
Specs:
1,4 Terrabyte harddisk total
4 Gb DDR2 @ 800 mhz 5-5-5-15
Q6600 @ 2.4 Ghz (not overclocked)
P5K-E motherboard
Creative 5.1 soundcard
any advice on wich card i should get for price/quality/support?
I just want to make sure that the problems don’t occure again
Thanks.

I always preferred nVidia, I’m not familiar with other graphics, even I had them…
As I know, nVidia is a bit more expensive, but I can always trust em… I have 2 nVidia 8800GTS in SLI… I can run games like crysis on highest without lagging… Only problem they have is their damn updates… They seem to concentrate more on DX 10 vid. cards, so they release lots of beta drivers, full of bugs…
But you cant expect just vid. card to run game… You need at least double of game optimal required CPU and ram…
Answer #2
you have not told your price range but if u want the cheaper one than u should go with ATI Radeon HD 4850 or GTS 250 / 9800 GTX+ they are nice and reviews are good.what is ur price range?
Answer #3
If you want ATi, go for the HD4870, its a truly awesome card.
For Nvidia, the GTX275 is a good choice.

Moving.

Answer #5
nvidia 9800 GT as for price and performance
Answer #6
The new 4770’s are great for price and performance. How much do you have to spend?
Answer #7
i was first thinking about the 4870 or even the 4890 because the price isnt that much diffrent, but i was kinda thinking about a card more around 100 euro – 150 euro max.
the 4770 has almost the same performance as the 4850 but only uses half the power.
so what would you recommend?
Answer #8
anyone have more ideas on good videocards for around 100 – 150 euro?
Answer #9
What is your power supply?
Answer #10
i have a Tagan SLI ready 650W. When i bought the computer, the shopowner told me it was eneugh to crossfire the HD3870
Answer #11
Well from my search, I can’t seem to find much information about your power supply.
Most of the time a glitchy video is highly likely to be cause by the PSU not supplying the required amount of current when needed.
Answer #12
No, it’s not the PSU if you want to say that :p just the ATI-drivers wich keep crashing on my HD3870. That’s why im looking forward to buy a card that doesn’t have such problems.
I can’t even startup Tom Clancy’s HAWX or even battlestations midway.
Answer #13
Well yep I say the 4770 can satisfy you for awhile. I haven’t checked the benchmarks for those games on that card.
Answer #14
it’s just under the 4850 wich is already 35% faster then my current HD3870, but the price is also just under the 4850
Answer #15
Its similar design, with a die shrink so it gives you a lesser worry in temperature.
Answer #16
HD3870 what manufacture is it… sapphire or something else… don’t download drivers from ATI site, go to web site of your manufacture
Answer #17
i got a sapphire.
I’ll try it, nice thinking
Answer #18
Nope, tested it and still no luck. Call of Duty 4 still gives Black screens which need to alt-tab to get rid of and ARMA2 just crashes and hangs.
I called the computercompany and they told me that the 4770 will not be available until end of june xD i guess it will be the 4870 1Gb then :p

Your 2.4GHz will bottleneck you on most mainstream games without multi-core support if you get a high end card. Consider overclocking.
Answer #20
hmm overclocking my cpu. Is there any safe guide for overclocking this cpu then? because i don’t want to wreck it (yet ;-P )
Answer #21
rsorry for the little bump, but there is a small update.
In my webshop i can get the XFX HD4850 and the HD4770 for 99 euro’s so wich one should i take? gonne order it this week..
Answer #22
I suggest the 9800gx2, expensive but will keep you safe for atleast a few years (no point in buying a Mini when you can buy a Mercedes …)
Answer #23
well i can also just buy the 4890 in crossfire-setup with a 4870 X2 xD
no i’m just intressted in those 2 cards bc of there price. Never gonne get Nvidia again after my last card…
