Upgrading from Win 8 to Win 8.1

January 27th, 2020

I’m planning to upgrade to Win 8.1 through the store update but I was wondering if the update is going to delete all the stuff on the OS drive, like the desktop, files in My Document, installed programs, drivers…etc ?
Anyone tried it before ?
Thanks.

The update to Windows 8.1 will not delete anything, all your files and programs will stay just as they are & just where they are.
It is simply an update to Windows 8. That said, you should always back up your files when performing a windows update as there is always the possibility that something could go wrong.
For me the process was smooth & seamless, everything was exactly how I left it.

Will I be able to keep my files, settings, and apps?
If you start your PC from installation media that you created when you downloaded the ISO, such as a DVD or USB flash drive, you won’t be able to keep your apps, Windows settings, or personal files when you install Windows 8.1.

My advice, Don’t take any chances!
Backup your data and do a clean install – That’s always the best way to go IMO.
Speaking about backups, Regardless to the issue at hand, It would be at your best interest to maintain em on a regular basis (As no HDD lasts forever!)
You are providing very inaccurate information here!
The text you quoted is true (If one boots from the disc) but not if one chooses to do an upgrade from within the existing OS! In fact, Underneath that text, M$ themselves specify (in a chart) what data will be saved (or not) depending on the source OS.
