The issue is likely that your external drive is formatted using Fat32. Fat32 has a size limit of 4G or so.
Right click on the drive in explorer and format to NTFS and you won’t have a problem.
If you already have files loaded, you’ll have to copy them back to the external again after the format.
Just in case you dont know what is a format, it deletes everything from your external drive, so whatever you have on your external drive, copy it to your computer then format it, then copy the files back

Indeed you can ; however, a backup is always recommended as if the disk conversion goes wrong, data recovery is not easy if even possible.
