[Solved] VGA works fine on monitor, HDMI and DVI not so..

August 17th, 2016

Built a PC. I don’t have a GPU, so it’s directly connected to the mobo. Thing is, while I have confirmation that HDMI and DVI works with other tv’s etc. (so it’s not broken), I can only use VGA cable and output on monitor. I forgot the DVI cable at my mothers home, so I don’t have that on me now. HDMI should suffice for now.
Why can’t I use HDMI or DVI on my monitor? When I put in both HDMI and VGA in my monitor (from PC), It automatically sets to screen 2 (VGA) and when I go to screen 1 (HDMI) it doesn’t work and after the 15 seconds without applying, it switches back to screen 2. Mind you this is all and the same monitor. Take a look:

So the way I see it:
VGA = screen 2
HDMI = screen 1
Notice how it says that screen 2 is set as my default screen (in dutch). How can I change it to default HDMI and or DVI? (It won’t allow me, it’s grey)
If I only put in HDMI and no VGA, and I’d start the computer and monitor, it would stay dark lit. I have been able to get it to work by pressing pc on and off and pulling the cable in and out. But this was incidental and not consistent. So I don’t think something is broken but more so some settings or whatever should change.
My motherboard: gigabyte ga-b85m-hd3
GPU: onboard gpu
Monitor: Syncmaster SA350

I can’t see any settings that should need to be changed and would think that it should work OK with just the HDMI connection and nothing plugged into VGA..
Maybe faulty cable or faulty jacks at either end..
Trying a different cable or trying the monitor with a different HDMI device or the computer with a different HDMI monitor is things to do.
This is a quick self check for your monitor..
5-1 Monitor Self-Diagnosis
• You can check if the product is working properly using the Self-Diagnosis function.
• If a blank screen is displayed and the Power LED blinks even if the product and the PC are properly connected, perform
the self-diagnosis function according to the procedures below.
1. Turn the product and the PC off.
2. Separate the signal cable from the product .
3. Turn the product on.
4. If the product is working properly, the <Check Signal Cable> message appears.
In this case, if a blank screen is displayed again, make sure that there is no problem with the PC and the connection. The
product is working properly.

Thing is, it does work, it works on my tv. This means that the jack and cable are all ok. Heck I can even only use HDMI to my tv. It’s just that I can’t use HDMI with my monitor.
I’m at a loss..
Answer #3
Maybe monitor is faulty on it’s HDMI input or it is locked into some unsuitable resolution or frame rate.
Try it with an HDMI input from another source such as a BR/DVD or media player..
Answer #4
Certain old monitors refuse to pickup HDMI signals after system booting.
Notable will be my old Viewsonic 27″. Works on DVI, but not on HDMI most of the time.

It’s a new monitor Iiyama E2480HS-B1. Any help/sugesstions are appreciated.

Never heard of that brand. At best you can do is look on newegg feedback.
Probably they won’t sell it.
Answer #7
It’s not the monitor, it’s my monitor at home too. It’s the system. Thing is, hdmi works when I put it on the tv.

TV’s are not usually picky about HDMI signals.
It is always the monitor.
Answer #9
I know it’s my monitor, it definitely is. What I meant is it’s not broken or anything, since it worked before because I plugged it in and out and restarted the pc several times. Then it worked. But after a restart it didn’t. I think it has something to do with the range it’s receiving from the desktop.
Perhaps it can only support analogue and not digital? Could there be something I missed when building the computer, when it comes to the mobo (digital/analogue)? Btw, I didn’t install the drivers from the mobo disc, perhaps this is the problem.. I’ll try next weekend.
Answer #10
Hoping you dont have both connections connected at the same time? maybe one has preference over the other.. Except for that I had a TV about 6 years old now, and of the cheaper LCD, and it wouldnt pick up HDMI either just cause it was cheap.. tested it with a game console and that worked, but it wouldn’t show a pic for PC just cause it wouldn’t probably like the prob you have..

No its nothing you missed, its a known problem. With some monitors, it won’t take signal after booting.

Try different resolutions from your computer such as
1920 x 1080 @60Hz
or
1280 x 720 @60Hz
Answer #13
Ok, will try different resolutions. Thanks.
Hmm, and , I thought so, thanks for confirming my feelings. I did indeed have both cables connected and it seems it takes preference over the hdmi, but it’s not showing (it did a few times though, incidentally). I guess I’ll have to use VGA. Does VGA give the same image as hdmi does? I know it can support 1080, but maybe it’s quallity is less.
Answer #14
HDMI is better, but to the naked eye, dont worry about it.. VGA aint bad at all… Used it myself for years, pretty much put the same (working) setup side by side (HDMI vs VGA), I dought you could tell the difference. (But technically HDMI is better..)

VGA is kind of prune to interference, it’s slightly better if there are ferrite chokes.
An analog signal will never be as good as digital. No immunity to crosstalk.
Have a look on wiki.
If you don’t even have DVI, you should upgrade as soon as possible. Dual link DVI has high frequency support, where’s HDMI is crippled at the moment.
Answer #16
It’s a new computer and new monitor. What I found out is that hdmi is automatically set as monitor 1, whereas vga is set as monitor 2. Is there a way to switch this on the pc? I believe it’ll output on the monitor if I do.
Answer #17
You can juggle the outputs on video settings in windows, Nvidia or AMD control pa.

I have an onboard video card. How would I do this on win 8?

That can be problematic, I think your options are limited.

There should be everything you need in Windows “Screen Resolution Pa” I would have thought..
Answer #21
Guys I solved it, ‘ish. I used hdmi cable. I changed a single setting in bios (something to do with onboard gpu) and the problem hasn’t occured in months. The thing still is that when I use windows button + P, the screen seems to be put on projector. I can’t seem to change it. But all is well now.
Thanks for all the help and input guys.
Answer #22
Thanks!….Hadn’t heard on Win + P key before..Handy.
Good you got your setting right.
Bioses can be a bit different and a bit of a pain!
