Is FLAC or APE capable of 5.1 surround sound?

I tried to convert lossless MLP 5.1 surround sound (from DVD-A) to FLAC but when I played it, nothing happened. It wouldn’t play at all.
Is FLAC or APE capable of handling 5.1 surround sound or is it limited to stereo?

I have a Logitec Z5500 5.1 speaker system running in digital with co-ax cable and an Auzen X-Plosion 7.1 (c-media) soundcard and at the moment I am listening to the Doors from a flac file and it is playing thru All of my speakers. you might have to look around and find the correct codecs but you should be able to make it work in all speakers. also try playing with the soundcard settings…..but I think I did it with the surround sound settings.

Yeah! I love The Doors! But is that Doors FLAC song in 5.1 surround sound sound or is it in stereo? What does MediaInfo say about the song?

You actually can play 5.1 “normal” files like AAC, DTS or AC3? And FLAC, the stereo works fine for you? Because you could have some kind of error on the codecs configs.
I’m pretty sure the FLAC is capable of 5.1 sound… I’ve downloaded a 720p rip of David Gilmour show which have 3 tracks of audio: 5.1 AC3, 2.0 FLAC and 5.1 FLAC (Encoded as Dolby TrueHD)
Here is the MediaInfo info, look at Audio #2:

Hope this helps you… Too bad I don’t know how to encode it, but FLAC can be played in 5.1 with any problems..
