If you want to display a JPG image as the folder thumbnail, just rename the image as folder.jpg and place it within the main folder – if thats what you’re asking for!

You need to edit *.dll files with a resource editor like Resource Hacker (freeware), Resource Builder, Resource Tuner or Restorator.
For example, grab the first software and go to: c:\windows\system32\imageres.dll. Copy it to desktop and open it with the program. You can try to edit the icon group for, let’s say, Windows HDD on my computer. Grab IcoFx or Axialis IconWorkshop and make an ico file from a png icon with a resolution of 128*128pixels at minimum.
Go to resource hacker and change icon group with the edited ico, save and replace it on sysem32 folder (don’t forget to save the old one just in case something goes wrong).
IcoFx also has a option to replace resources, but I prefer Resource Hacker.
If you have any trouble, please post here and I try to make a step-by-step tutorial in 24 hours

Right click on that “My Computer” icon, then create a shortcut, then change the icon of that shortcut.

I made a video showing how to change. Just wait a few minutes until I compress it and upload it.
EDIT: check your inbox folder.
EDIT2: Never forget! Always backup the files! Rename them as .old or copy them to c:\ (easy to locate)

There you go: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/73191-icons-change-using-resource-hacker.html
The same I did, only for a different icon
Answer #13
Right click the file, go to properties, the on the shortcut tab select change icon
Edit: by file, i mean the desktop icon.

That’s the way to do it for all .lnk files (shortcuts) except those known as desktop icons (My Computer, Control Panel, etc). For those you have to right click on desktop -> Personalize -> Change desktop icons.

Personally I dislike that program. Tried it in the past and some icons weren’t restored, not to mention that if the package doesn’t have all the icons of the system, some will remain the original ones.
But that’s my opinion
