HDTV and HDD

August 22nd, 2013

I have a Sony EX720 series HDTV in which I have been watching downloaded movies by cleaving the mkv, muxing to mp4, copying to pendrive, to TV’s USB port. But the flashdrive gets overloaded easily so for now I am thinking of buying a external hard drive 500 GB or 1 TB rather than spending on a Blu-ray player which can’t be upgraded. I came across products like WD Elements Portable, Seagate GoFlex but was’t sure they would serve the purpose. Please enlighten me on this.
USB storage formats supported : FAT32, exFAT

It would be a good idea to try a portable hard drive on the TV to see if it can support it power wise and size wise etc.
If it becomes a hassle then buy yourself a media player…Then you can connect the media player to the TV and the HDD to the media player and play anything you want..You won’t have to worry about converting .mp3s and so on..
Lots of players around these days, Here’s some..

You should have bought a Samsung
Buy what the OP says. Sony might only support FAT32 or ExFAT.

Nel replied: You should have bought a Samsung ah! It’s like family stuff! Parents prefer Sony over other brands.. Had to buy that..
So there is no way to connect HDD, watch .mkv movies?
Thanks!

Is the drive got the power led on and spinning up OK..
If so, put a small FAT32 partition on the drive and try that.
Don’t look like they play .mp3 though, would need to put in .mp4 container, like with PS3.
ExFAT is another possibility, you can have large files with that, because FAT32 won’t go above 4GB..

Power led is green, I guess it’s on.. Spinning?
HDD power light is also on, but it doesn’t show up anything on TV..
Damm!! I want to play some music [rare], watch movies mainly [.mkv 8GB]..
Buying 16-32GB pen drive and make it ExFat, will this work?
Thanks!

Your HDD might work if you reformat it though or just make a exfat partition on it.

just to point out alot of media players will playback mkv files so it would save you having to convert the files also they are constatly dropping in price,i reckon you would get one for under 100$/100€ i have an iomega player and its the best investment i have ever made.hope this helps
