Failed to configure Windows updates?

I have chosen to install all Windows updates at once, but as expected everything failed, so can you guys give me some advice to avoid such errors in the future?
This usually happens when the updates need an earlier update installed before they can install them selves. So for example say you got 7 updates at once, the first one installs successfully (but needs a restart to complete), and then the rest fail, because they cant install until the first one is installed after the restart. So you restart your comp and the first one completes, retry the updates and they should install correctly..
