External HDD Samsung 640 GB Not working
January 21st, 2020
Hook it up directly to your PC.
It works now. I copy data with GetDataBack and create partition again.
Hope you learned a valuable lesson from this experience, You should never underestimate
the importance of backup! Next time, You might not be so lucky!
@roberto, does hdd’s become faulty if I don’t use them?
I’ve a 2 year old 160gb hdd. (no bad sector.)
suppose I backed up some data on to that disc, disconnect it and keep it in my drawer. (well packed)
Is there still any chance of not detecting that hard drive or getting corrupted data after a year or two?

Nope.

Anythings possible, But it’s very unlikely to happen!
Your post does make me wonder if you understand the true meaning of backup tho.
Backup is when you keep certain data on 2 or more storage devices/online backup
so if something happens to the first one, You got the other one!
If you just keep certain data onto an external HDD (and nowhere else) then that’s not
backup at all! That being said, The odds of 2 HDDs to fail at the same time are very low!
But if you wanna be on the safe side, Maintain dual backup (Another ext HDD or online backup)
my main hdd is 500gb. I wanted to keep some of them safe in case my primary hdd fails. Of course there will be two copies. (as in, one copy in my primary hdd, backup copy 160gb hdd). Now suppose my primary hdd fails at a point after a year or two. I connect other hdd to recover my backup files to a new hdd. And now if that hdd is not detected in bios (due to not being used for a long time), I’m doomed. :p what are the odds?
Sorry my english is bad.
what are the odds?
Probably 1 in a million. But as said before, You could take further precautions if your feeling paranoid^
And now if that hdd is not detected in bios (due to not being used for a long time)
That doesn’t make the HDD any less reliable or any more prone to failures!
Sudden Electrical/Mechanical failures can occur at random with any HDD however, But I’d
say such failures are less likely to happen with an HDD that is rarely used than one being used
on a daily basis.
Sorry my english is bad
Your English is better than you think!
