Bios Upgrade(SOLVED)
July 31st, 2013
Today on booting it almost immediately (just a brief flash of the F2 – F12 option screen then direct into Bios setup. I changed the delay time for F” to 10 secs but this has no effect. There appears to be no problem hihglighted in the Bios.
Only way to boot into Windows is to tap F10 repeatedly whilst on Phoenix screen it then goes into a normal mode with 10 seconds of the Bios screen and then goe son to load windows. As it is a laptop I am selling it would be more than useful for it to start normally. Not really a good sales pitch to tell someone to tap F10 to start!!
Any ideas welcomed please.
was there a problem that required the BIOS update to start with ?
you try changing the boot order to HDD 1st in the BIOS ?
Yes you got it the same one!! I finally found a windows based bios upgrade as per this post. I have changed the boot order to HD first but I do not think that the bios run is getting that far. It gets to checking memory, hd, cd etc reaches mouse and kb and then switches you into the setup. My pressing F10 for some reason stops this process allows the bios to do its bit and after the 10 second delay Windows starts
was there a problem that required the BIOS update to start with ?
asking why the BIOS update was needed to begin with ?
try setting the CD 1st and the HDD 2nd in boot order
there any key in the BIOS to reset it to default ?
Yep he’s right, why update the bios when you don’t need it. For me I upgrade my bios only when I need to, like new features and support for over 3TB HDD and stuff like that.
It was needed as I was upgrading memory, there was 256 mb of DDR 2100 and 512 MB of DDR 2700, I needed to move up to 2 times 512 mb PC270 which MB is suppossed to support but when inserted BIOS always failed to start it was Crucial who told me to upgrade. I have tried to CD as firsy and also there are no settings in Bios that appear wrong. Also reset to default. Am going to try today with minimal memory to see if that changes anything and also check battery just in case it is as simple as not enough power to hold Bios open.
Randomnoob – thanks for comment but not helpful what is done is done, I am trying to find way out now. I am fairly experienced and would never upgrade a Bios without reason.
Is there an option in the BIOS to change POST Behaviour, eg. Fast Boot, if there is select this, it will skip all the steps in the boot process (like bypassing some compatability steps).
There are very few options in BIOS. No system time, you can change language. Normal auto etc for HD Vid etc. Obviously security options all set clear, boot options are normal HD CD and LAN, tried all variants. Advanced menu !!!! gives option to check HD – done and no problems and another tab with main battery info. I must admit that I find Phoenix Bios which crops up on a number of laptops – HP, Packard Bell, Advent etc to useless as regards options, but it is a laptop so not that many tweaks anyway I guess. I looked at all stages and cannot anything that looks to be worth a try at changing. It is a very limited BIOS menu.
Currently running Kaspersky 2011 Rescue Disk in faint hope that perhaps there is something there, will then load HP e-diagtools for Windows and see if that throws any light. Normally I think with a laptop of this vintage I would give up break and sell for spares however it is my son’s and I promised to try to raise some cash for him (skint as per normal).
Have you looked at the settings in your system startup in the OS itself ?
Not sure what OS you are using, XP is System Properties > Advanced Tab > System Startup
I haven’t will try any clue what I might need to look for? It is XP Pro so I assume you mean same as running msconfig from “run command”?
Still not found a solution. Starting to wonder what real issue is. Now it will only boot into Bios setup, previously if you presses F10 or F8 whilst on Bios logo screen you could sometimes force a boot into windows. Action taken so far – tried alternatate memory and changed slots around, checked and changed Bios battery, looked at all options within Bios to make changes but none available make a difference. Ther eappears to be no system time within Bios menu which is unusual? Ran independent AV check on HD in another PC all OK, did image of HD copied this to another HD and tried that – same problem. Ran “Mem Test” which checks processor and memory no problems found. Re Meercats suggestion when I last managed to access Win XP Pro I checked the startup file in Props Advanced all seemed normal and nothing to change.
Is there any gain to had by downloading Phoenix Bios editor and seeing if anything can be done there, no idea what but maybe something might show. Only other possibility I though of was to somehow (I do not know how) clear Bios of all and then reinstall either same update or perhaps an earlier one.
All POSITIVE help welcomed!
