[Solved] Keyboard and mouse won’t work during boot/bios

August 9th, 2016

Hi
I was trying to boot windows 8 from usb, there was 1 tutorial which told me to disable usb legacy, and so I did.
After that, whenever I boot, the keyboard won’t work and I can’t press the keys like f10 etc.
Before disabling legacy, it was working.
Any solutions on how to use the keyboard to access bios?

Answer #1
Is this your laptop ash? You can try connecting a keyboard via usb(might need to try different ports), I’ve got legacy disabled on desktop and my mechanical keyboard doesn’t work in BIOS so I connect a roll up keyboard for BIOS work.
Answer #2
You’re gonna have to reset your BIOS in order to get this fixed!
Clearly, You’re gonna have to open it up for this task (Also, Make sure you disconnect the power cord, Otherwise this won’t work!) Anyways, Locate the round CR2032 battery, Which looks like this:

There should be a small latch holding it in place, Gently push a small flat screwdriver against it, And it’d pop out.
Leave it out for at least 10 mins and then put it back in (It’s important you do this accurately, As in the same way it was before, With the + sign on top) put it all back together and power it up, Then enter BIOS and load defaults, Re-adjust the time/date and boot device priority accordingly (And for future reference, The only settings you need to change in order to boot from a USB device is the highlighted part^) Good luck.

Considering people don’t ordinarily use external keyboards with their laptops, I’d say this is highly unlikely.
And for the record, Integrated laptop keyboards are not affected by USB settings.
so I connect a roll up keyboard for BIOS work.
PS/2 would be the more accurate term.

Nope, its the desktop pc in my house. I only have usb keyboards, is that what you mean by roll up keyboards? Anyway, I’ve changed from my samsung laptop to a Asus s46cb

Ohk, I’ve removed the power cord and took out the cmos battery. I’ll post back in 10 mins.
Anyway before I disabled the legacy, my win 8 usb could boot from a different laptop. When I connect the same to the desktop which runs on uefi, it wont boot from there. USB is in fat32 and its set as the first boot up option.
I guess my next problem after solving this problem will be to boot up the usb mentioned earlier.
I’ve done the steps shown here to configure win 8.1 to a bootable usb

Well, In fairly modern motherboards where UEFI is used, You have to also disable secure boot and enable CSM in order for it to work.
Answer #5
^ how do I do that?
I’ve read on other websites that enabling CSM solved the problem similar to mine. But where do I set it in this bios?
I can’t find them in any tabs including boot or security. Current desktop OS is win 7 ultimate
And also do I select USB sandisk or uefi sandisk?

Also don’t plug it into a USB 3.0 port as it won’t register for boot purposes. You can also opt for EFI boot at the install screen (where you select which drive to install on) by opening cmd (shift F10) diskpart , select your install drive, clean and then enter convert gpt rather than disabling secure boot.
Edit:CSM is normally on the boot tab, however it maybe on the security tab on yours(maybe not didn’t read that bit )

Check the Advanced/Security tabs, It’s probably on one of those.
You may not have the CSM option (As the boot settings already allows you to do the same function with picking standard vs uefi booting per device)
But you should at least have the secure boot option.
And also do I select USB sandisk or uefi sandisk?
First one.

I didn’t had to change any options in the end. My win 8 usb booted up.
But now I run into this error. I can’t seem to get pass this step.

I downloaded win 8.1 from share’s topic.
http://www.google.com?t=15950523&start=0
I googled it and it tells me to redo the usb drive at a lower speed. I extracted the iso files directly onto the usb.
Answer #9
Try installing on a different USB port, preferably USB2 on the back.
Answer #10
I suggest you do the following:
1. Verify your flash drive is in good health using this app:
http://www.google.com?t=17463968&start=0
Select the correct drive from the top, Goto the error scan tab and click start
If you see any red blocks then your FD is not in good condition.
2. Re-do the Windows>Flash drive process with another tool.
First format it (Open up Computer>Right click the drive letter>Format>Do a quick one)
Then use universal usb installer:
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/
Select Windows 8 Installer from the list and point it to the ISO, It’s pretty simple.
Do note however that with this method, You will not be prompted when booting from it (Press any key to boot from cd.. I mean)
It’d boot directly into Windows setup, So after setup restarts your computer, You’re gonna have to readjust the boot order so
the HDD would be first, Otherwise it’d just boot from the FD again.
Answer #11
@BC: It was already on a USB 2 port. I tried changing to different ports. So I redid the flash drive using a different tool and now I can install win 8.
But I run into this error. I think I’ve seen other people posting similar issues on share’s topic

EDIT: I had to unplug all the unwanted wires and it installed fine. Thanks again to both of you for all your help
Answer #12
Glad its working ash
