Adding subtitles to a movie :)

September 21st, 2013

so yeah. how do you add subtitles to a movie.
i know that for movies without subs, you can download a .srt (notepad) file that has the subs on it and you just have to have them in the same directory and you’ll have subtitles, but what i want to know is how to put the subtitles directly into the movie so that you’ll no longer need to use the .srt file. so that the movie file will have the subs in it thanks in advance matE!

hard coded or just in the container? MKV containers can contain multiple subs files. Avi can too although it’s not so well supported, especially by standalone players.
MKVMerge GUI
AVIMux GUI

With MKV files, you can use mkvmerge GUI which places the subtitles inside the MKV container. I’m not sure if that’s possible with other formats like AVI, MP4, MPG, etc.
The other option is Hard Subtitles which are encoded directly into the video. Two apps I use that can do that from SRT or other subtitles formats are TMPGEnc Video Mastering Works 5.0.6.38 and HandBrake 0.9.5. The only drawbacks are the video has to be re-encoded and you’ll lose some quality, and the subtitles will always appear on the video, no option for turning them off.
