Whats the main use of the system?
Answer #2
Go with the ripjaws (the corsair is only 1333 anyway), I strongly suggest an i5, no need for an aftermarket HSF with the i3-2100 except to reduce noise, and get a better PSU, because your also missing a GPU.

a htpc
Answer #4
Consider i3-2105 It is only $10 costlier than 2100
It is the same as 2100 but with HD3000 graphics. Check the reviews of HD 2000 and 3000 online and you’d find that HD 3000 is far FAR superior to 2000 and since you aren’t using a graphics card, hence this just one-time investment of $10 is very worth it!
And you don’t need 8 GBs for an HTPC.

il have a look at that and yes your right i dont it is a serious overkill :L
Answer #6
HTPCs are supposed to be quiet. The case, HDD, PSU and cooler aren’t stuff I’d take for an HTPC.

i know thats why i really need some help :S i dont know what case or psu to buy? im told to go the extra on psu becuase if i get a cheap one and it fails i could risk damaging all my components?
btw: 400th post

Specify a total budget and let’s see if we can cook something up.

thanks man! i can spend about £250 and get buy adiddtion things later. i dont really want a mini htpc case and would prefer a tower and is it possible to get a sandy bridge in that price range? i also have a 1tb hdd lying around

Most tower cases are not quiet. There are a few though like the Fractal Design R3 which are pretty good. If you want better you’d either need to foam the interior yourself or buy “pre-foamed” case like the Lian Li B10 (expensive as hell but has better foam than the R3). For your build though there’s absolutely nothing you’d lose getting a small case like a Lian Li Q08. Since it’s an HTPC as long as you can playback HD content and have ample storage the rest is not necessary. An AMD A6/A8 coupled with a Mini-ITX motherboard like the F1A75-I or A75M-ITX would be ideal. For the PSU you should look for stuff from Seasonic X series as they are either semi-fanless or completely fanless. Be Quiet! PSUs are pretty good as well.
Btw the ASUS board (F1A75-I) comes with WiFi and bluetooth built in, a remote and SPDIF out.

Thanks for mentioning that i didnt really know which things are quiet or not and that would be a very important factor. but i would much prefer an intel i3 board ive chosen the fractal case that is seriously nice but expensive! the lian li q08 is not very nice the leds would be to distracting and it only has one disk drive slot? Teh asus MOBO you mentioned is seriosuly nice is there an intel atx version of it? and the wifi and remote would be a very nice feature to have! thanks
Answer #13
but i would much prefer an intel i3 board
The A6/A8 on die HD6550 GPU completely rapes the HD 3000 found on the Intel SB processors.
the lian li q08 is not very nice the leds would be to distractingReplace it with a regular 140MM fan. It’s not hard. The case looks absolutely stunning imo you must have poor taste. Btw Lian Li manufacturers the cases for Fractal Design.
and it only has one disk drive slot? Why do you need more than one optical drive bay? 6 internal 3.5″ bays and one external 5.25″ is more than enough.
Teh asus MOBO you mentioned is seriosuly nice is there an intel atx version of it?Nope. It’s made for a niche market namely the HTPC market. There are some Mini ITX socket 1155 boards with Wifi but the overall cost would be more expensive and you’ll end up with a lower performance rig.
Answer #14
I like the AMD A8-3850 for HTPC just now. it completely destroys intel for integrated GPU.
EDIT: Never seen the post above mine.
I’m not the only one who would use it then.
On topic, i just sold my antec nsk 1380 case. i was going to use it for a HTPC but plans changed.
The case though was awesome. small and dead quiet.
Oh and it comes already with a suitable PSU.
EDIT: wait didn’t we just go through a thread on a rig for video encoding etc?
If that’s what you are doing then stick with the i3 setup.

i might have bad have bad taste but i really dont like the look of the lian :S
what do you think of this one? http://www.scan.co.uk/products/coolermaster-silencio-rc-550-mid-tower-full-black-%28in-out%29-silent-case-usb-30-with-35-x-doc-sd-card-
and i dont want to get amd because i prefer intel. I was thinking of going the extra mile and ask my dad for a bit of money so i could get the i5 2500k and overclock it? i mainly wanted to use teh pc as a htpc but i also wanted to use it for games such as mw3 etc and was just going to upgrade my graphics card later when i have some more money. the feature i liked most about the asus mobo is the remote, hdmi, usb 3 and wifi. i dont mind that much i can buy a wifi card What mobo would you reccomend to me that has hdmi, usb 3 and 6gb/s sata around £60? thanks

yeah thanks we did but i wasnt sure which mobo and case to use and needed help and advice on the part specifactions. and if its worth even building my own i know that you said ebay is for suckers but look at the build above i cant get my prices even close to it
Answer #16
That ebay PC comes with a ColoursIT PSU and case. I wouldn’t touch that with a barge pole (nasty nasty nasty cheapo stuff).
I managed to copy it’s exact spec at scan for cheaper with a massively overpriced 500gb hdd included and the same atrocious case/psu combo (though different design case there are 100s).
This would be cheaper and with a 1tb sammy hdd if it wasn’t for the stupid floods pushing the prices of hdd’s through the roof right now.

Thanks i see what you mean i hate the case :S what do you think of the cooolermaster one i posted up there? And if i combine that with a be quiet psu would it be silent? I heard hitachi hdds are not very good and tend tp fail a lpt so il avoid that and use my seagate =-50 and is there a good spesific mobo you would recommend to me? I need hdmi on it and usb 3 thanks i would go with everything else from the build

With a budget like that you’re not gonna go anywhere to be honest.

sorry i was planning to buy and upgrade as i go along?
what to do you think of this paroxy and jock juffalo?

Answer #20
I think it looks fine and dandy.
I like the case you picked, not seen or used one ever but have read good things about the noise levels.
If you are interested in upgrading in the future to aa better cpu and overclocking then something like this board might be worth investing in.
The one you have will be fine, but it’s not going to be good for overclocking if you wish to have that ability.

thanks i might just wait for ivy bridge? it is rumored to come out in march next year and if the i5 2500k prices drop il just get one of those

The Silencio 550 has crappy airflow if that matters. Imo it’s better spending the extra on the FD Define R3.

is it really worth it i have a very limited budget and im already streching it as it is?
Answer #24
It has a sole 120mm intake on the front and very limited ventilation on the front for intake. The idle temperatures are pretty laughable when looking at the ambient in this review. Oh and yeah SPCR makes some of the best case reviews.

Should work fine for your build though. But I wouldn’t put a heavy GPU or overclock in there.
