Slow Windows 7 x64

September 7th, 2013

Hey guys! As the title says, my Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate is very slow. Whether it be starting or loading programs, it takes a while. First I thought maybe it’s the HDD, but many programs such as Sony Vegas, FL Studio, or Pro Tools take a very long time to render etc. Games are pretty slow @ low or max res and settings. (Which is obvious because if you see my specs there must be a MAJOR bottleneck right now until I can get a new GFX Card) I checked my BIOS settings and upgraded it, all seems fine there (No OC and temps are about 30C Stock with a Cooler Master Hyper 212 +. Many defrags and formats don’t seem to work. All proper updated hardware drivers , seem not to increase performance. It seems like I have done everything, any ideas?

Thanks!

My Specs:

Intel i5 2500k @ Stock

Cooler Master Hyper 212 +

Acer 20 in Monitor @ 1600×900

OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W Modular Power Supply

NVIDIA Geforce 9800GT 1GB Green Edition

Kingston 16 GB RAM

MSI P67A-G43 Mobo (1155)

320GB Western Digital 5400 RPM HDD (OS)

750GB Maxter 5400 RPM (Storage – Ripped from External casing)

Try deleting your temp files
-Click on Start and then Run.
-In the text box in the Run window, type %temp% and click OK. A folder full of files and other folders will appear.
– Delete those files and folder
P.S – You may receive a Error Deleting File or Folder message while the files are being deleted. This just means that one of the files is in use by a program right now . You can leave those files

Well unfortunately, I tried even that :/
A format doesn’t seem to fix it.

Did you try the performance troubleshooter?
Open Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. Under System and Security, click Check for performance issues.

Try scanning your computer with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Spybot Search and Destroy(Update both of the programs databases, disable your internet, then scan!)
Next, Go to my computer, Right click on your hard drive and click Properties then run Disk Cleanup
Finally, try Defragmenting your computer. But do this at very last.

what is ur avg. CPU usage ?
do u get lag spikes!
Answer #7
Have you tried another PSU?
Answer #8
As paroxysM said, maybe your computer is not receiving enough power. Your hardware seems to consume lots of power, so the PSU might be causing the lagging. Try with a stronger one..

Nah his PSU is wayy more than enough though if it had a faulty rail somewhere this kind of thing might happen. He could run it off a 400W if he wanted to.

tried checking your hard drive ?
Answer #11
Well thanks for the replies guys!
Firstly, yes there are lag spikes at time, but it seems usually idle or even when some programs are open the usage is close to 0.
I checked my HDD for errors and bad sectors and still no luck.
Finally, today I tested a new PSU and had no luck!
Thanks for all the replies

Noticed you have a 5400rpm HDD, that’s going to slow things down significantly. Invest in a small SSD and load Windows on it, you’ll notice the immediate difference
