How to convert videos to smaller size.
January 22nd, 2020
thanks in advance.
Handbrake would be fine for doing that.

sorry but I disagree. handbrake sucks, it loses too much quality.
OP: you’re better off using scripts, running megui or x264bot. you will always lose quality but depending on the filters you use, you won’t notice the difference.
As said, Handbrake is all what you need, here is great tutorial for it – link for handbrake is also inside:

Now it all depends on the “source” file but some things I do different than what is in tutorial.
For resolution – I don’t go lower than 720p. – it depends on the “source” but usually when I put 720p it is 1280×544 (So, in Width tab write 1280, make sure Keep aspect ratio is checked first).
If the resolution is already 720p I wouldn’t change it.
What else, I use Avg bitrate option with 2-pass encoding and with Turbo first Pass.
For good Avg bitrate, at least for me it is:
500 kbps for 30 minutes.
165 kbps for 10 minutes.
Since you want lower file size I would use, well I don’t know.
Just test it, you also have an preview option.
The rest you can do by following that tutorial.
If your PC is good then it will be easy for you, currently I’m doing one movie with the Handbrake, it started 10 hours ago and I need 10 hours till it finish.
And to answer – Handbrake doesn’t lose too much quality at all, if it does lose it means your settings are wrong.
you must have a low spec PC then considering the time it’s taking you.
but yes, handbrake compared to 10bit Megui or even x264bot with filters, you can’t beat it. VAiN, MiLLENiUM to name a few that are using scripts…
oh well, you’re not going to listen. good luck OP.
Well, it is 6 years old PC and it wasn’t the newest one at that time. – yet I can play Skyrim without any problem on high settings.
With the new PC you can do it in 2 hours, even faster.
Also, I’m not saying that what you’ve posted is wrong, I just wanted to say that I disagree with your opinion that Handbrake lose too much quality and I can confirm and post pics as some kind of proof if you don’t believe me.
And why OP wouldn’t listen to you or was that for me.
It is his choice on what he will use, right.
It also depends on what you’re wanting as well. Just now i’ve ripped a few dvds, and because i want to watch from my usb drive and i want smaller files than what dvdfab gives me, i’ve use Freemake to convert to mp4, set at either dvd or tv quality. And that’s fine for me, but would i do the same if i were to upload for others, no. I think what Headyv2 was saying is that for those who know what they’re really doing, use better than Handbrake. That’s not to say it doesn’t do a good job, as you’re happy with your results, otherwise you’d be asking how to do better encodes too lol. But other programs have come out since Handbrake, so they’ve moved on from it.

Good tutorial, although unless you want mono sound, I would change the audio settings as follows..
Mixdown > Stereo
Codec > AAC(faac)…(The vorbis codec is not compatible with all stand alone players..)
Bitrate > 96
I usually use about 700kB/s for bit rate and would not advise going less than 500kB/s.
(Or just use that Constant Quality 26 RF setting)
The size of the file will, of course, depend on the length of the movie..
