Zebra Thermal Printer

January 23rd, 2020

I usually print on 4×6″ Labels,
but I need to print on 4×8″…
even though i’ve put in 4×8 on the settings,
it’s still printing weird,
its cutting the top off and adding loads of space underneath,
any ideas?

Answer #1
What software are you using to print?
Answer #2
Well I have a Mac, I was using Photoshop or the Preview Window, but obv they aren’t made for Macs and the quality of the print was a bit crap,
so I downloaded and installed Parallels with Windows so I could install the original Drivers etc, on that, again, I use the normal preview window,
i’m not sure what other software there is for Windows I could use, as I print designs on the Stickers, I dont use it for Barcodes etc etc.
Answer #3
EEEK… well I’m not the best person to be offering advice on this one. Mac / Parallels etc isn’t something I have experience with.
I’ll just throw a hail-mary and suggest that it might have something to do with your margin settings or page layout. Maybe you have the 8″ as the width or vice versa?
Answer #4
Nope, everything seems to fit in fine, I design them on 4×8″ canvases, never had a problem with 4×6″ which is what I always use, but a customer wanted 4×4″ Stickers done, so obv using the 4×8″ ones and then cut in half….
just weird how its printing, i’ve downloaded and installed NiceLabel on Windows but even though thats sent to 4×8″ it’s printing too small with bad quality, really annoying!
especially as I have piles and piles of 4×8″ Labels.
Answer #5
Doing a google got me thinking.
If you are printing multiple labels at a time, can you print a 4×4 label combined with:
http://www.princeton.edu/~clusters/printless/n-up-mac.html
So it will print two 4×4 labels on the same sheet? Another clueless thought lol
Answer #6
I think its down to the tearing etc, im not sure how it works exactly…
I dont want to mess around with settings im not sure of incase I mess it up altogether,
as the 4×6″ ones have been printing fine… was going to add some extra to the ‘top margin’ to maybe bring the design down…
but not im just getting an error saying there isn’t enough memory to print pictures and to close other programs, yet nothing else is open!
Answer #7
Have you seen this?

Answer #8
Not sure what else I can offer you that we didn’t cover in your previous Zebra thread. Hard to tell without looking at your template settings and print driver settings. Can you post an image of what is wrong with the print? It might lend some clues. These Zebras can be fussy at the best of times. I don’t miss supporting them at work anymore.
Answer #9
Here is a photo of how they’re coming out…
the ones that mostly look the same is the method I usually use for the 4×6″ (which works fine)
for some reason, setting it to 8″ instead just makes them print like that…
theres no way I can get the 2 head designs perfect on 1 Label like its supposed to.

Answer #10
Just printed the 1 head on 1 4×6″ instead with the 4″ height marked off so I know where to cut… will just have to print double
obv could of printed 50 and cut in half to make the 100,
but now have to print 100 and cut off the extra 2″, annoying!

I don’t really want to print from the Mac itself as the Driver isn’t that good,
the design/text/lines printed aren’t clean etc,
where as printing from Windows (on the Mac) with the official Driver, the design/text/lines come out cleaner,
thanks anyway

Answer #12
Did you calibrate when you switched paper size? Hold the button down for 3 seconds.
Answer #13
Try setting the printer margin/label size to manual setup when in the driver settings and not the 4×8 setting that you use.
Otherwise the Zebra is rembering the last know size and you need to calibrate the printer
Answer #14
No didn’t calibrate when changing, totally forgot about that, will try it tomorrow…
thanks a lot.
Answer #15
try landscape + put paper in full width ??
Answer #16
I have a Label Printer, Labels can only go in 1 way.
Answer #17
calibrate and it should work correctly, Zebra are funny this way….Datamax is much easier to use, but different story
do you use commercial software like labelview or codesoft?
Answer #18
Put the 4×8″ in,
pressed the button for 3 seconds and it printed out the setting text,
opened the 4×8″ image to print, made sure 4×8″ was selected as there is no ‘auto’
but still it’s printing too far over so cutting a lot of the end of the design off.
Answer #19
If you press the feed button, does one full label feed? It sounds like it didn’t calibrate.
From the manual:
Press and hold the Feed button until the green status light flashes once, then twice and then continuing until the flash groups reach the group of seven flashes. Release the Feed button.
Answer #20
Yay it works, the ‘hold down for 3 seconds’ which someone said was wrong…
what you put worked, with the 7 flashes
thanks a lot….
I guess now, when needing 4×6″ again, I have to do the whole 7 flashes again,
obv with the 4×6″ Labels in instead.
Answer #21
correct, when you change label size again in the future, you need to calibrate the zebra again
Answer #22
Back again…..
Does anyone know whether I can actually print shades on this Printer?
GK420d
When I first had it, I wasnt familiar with the settings etc, and I printed 2 designs and there was different darknesses on 1 print,
but now i’ve set it up properly with Windows and the proper driver etc etc I cant seem to get that print option again,
unless i’m completely missing it somewhere.
Answer #23
I don’t believe that you can print grey shades. All shading would be done with textures: dots, cross hatch etc.

Answer #25
Are you using the native Windows driver or driver from the label maker software that you use.?
Answer #26
I downloaded the actual Zebra Driver for Windows (using Windows on my iMac)
I printed this sticker when I was first trying the Printer on the Mac itself (not windows)
obv not knowing much about the Printer or it’s settings so not sure what was what or how I managed to do this.

Answer #27
You cannot use a bigger format but you can print on multiple labels. You have to do a lot of tries, but you should succeed in making a three-four label image.
Answer #28
I believe that the difference in the apparent darkness/lightness is due to wider dot spacing. What happens when you print the same image again now?
Answer #29
yea, change the dpi setting to something lower, like the lowest setting, so if its a 300 dpi printer use 150 etc and you will get a grey scale type of print out, which means less clarity, but a muted black/white or gray contrast on output.
Otherwise get a label software program like labelview to get a better print driver. Ask and I can get you a hack.
Answer #30
Hey guys, someone with the exact same printer as me, also using a Mac, is able to print greys that are solid (like the black)
where as im only able to print grey if its dotted…
he said he just saves the files as PNG and his prints solid grey, I tried that on both Mac and Windows but no luck,
still printing greys with dots…
there is only 3 dpi options aswell, the 203, 300 and 600.. I always set it at 203 (think thats it) as thats what the printer is.
Any other suggestions on this?
i’ve downloaded the software and driver for Windows, the Zebradesigner, but again, just dots…
whenever i print from the Mac itself, the quality is a lot worse…
so i’ll continue to use Windows as these Printers are made for Windows…
but I need to know how people are able to print solid greys :-/
Answer #31
Downloaded the LabelView 2014 Gold Demo…
added the greyscale image on there, and printed from LabelView,
but still printing the grey with dots
Answer #32
Settings are at 30 darkness and 3 speed, 203dpi…
printing on Windows comes out like this:

printing on Mac comes out like this:

original design is like this:

Answer #33
THIS THING IS WINDING ME UP!!!
Decided to take everything off to do with Zebra etc from the Mac and Windows to redo it from scratch,
on Mac, uninstalled the Printer, reinstalled it using the Driver EPL2 (already tried CPLP and ZPL I believe they are)
some wouldnt print, but now back using EPL2 (which it was previously) and now the print is just awful,
even though the darkness is on 30, and I put speed on 3 (5 seems to be a bit poorer quality on the black)
but still, the black is awful!
Did the same on Windows, unstalled everything, redid it from scratch, same poor quality,
I reset the Printer etc and calibrated etc etc but still awful!
it’s a shame Zebra wont release a good driver for Macs!
Can anyone help with this?
if it’s better using Inbox instead?
I also tried LabelView and the ZebraDesigner before to get the solid grey but they didn’t work,
but now, I aint fussed on the grey at the moment, as the black itself isn’t going right!

Answer #34
did you try the zebra driver included with Labelview?
it should work much better than the native Windows driver from zebra, since they only make a crap version and let the software guys make a good one for them.
the LV version hacked or not should give a decent print out put, but for some limitations.
find one that works and I can likely still get you a hack on it.
Answer #35
Shall I just download the LabelView 2014 Gold Demo again? can a hack still be used with that?
when you go onto it it says Activate or Try…. obviously went on Try earlier…. but still wouldn’t print out solid grey,
will download it again now, Labelview 2014 Gold.
Answer #36
Downloaded LabelView Demo…
there was no separate Driver file though……
but on LV when printing grey, again, it’s just dots,
even when changing the dither…
‘detailed – smoothe – none’ all have the same sort of dots
and ‘scanned’ has slightly different dots,
but still nothing solid.
that’s still at 30 darkness and 3 speed.
Answer #37
Any luck with that key for LabelView?
Answer #38
Let me check…I can likely get u a hardware key version, LPT or usb, so send me a pm and I would need to send it to you by post, the hardware key, if thats cool with you…it’s free after all.
Answer #39
Hey I already sent an email a couple of weeks ago, did you get it?
Answer #40
Anyone else got a Key for this, not sure if is active or getting my messages… or if anyone else knows any other good label printing software for Windows or Mac.
Answer #41
never got ur pm
