wireless router

January 29th, 2020

my wireless router lynksys wrt54g i just found a client that i dont know of listed. probably my neighbor downstairs.
question is, if i dont have any files shared can they see anything else on my computer? i looked under my network places and dont see anything there like their shared folders either.
or they only getting my internet or more?

Answer #1
Depends on how your computer is set up. The IP could also be any electronics you may have networked to it. I assume you’re looking at the DHCP client table?
Answer #2
yes dhcp clients table.
both the ip address and mac address are visible.
Answer #3
They shouldn’t be able to see anything of yours unless it’s shared. However, if they are smart, they can figure out a way to get in to your network. I advise that you put security on your network (which you should always have anyway). I too have a WRT54G and I’m a networking major. If you need help with this, ask.
Answer #4
\\yourcomputername\c$
Does that work?
Answer #5
yes. my sister is the only one with a wireless card on her desktop. but she’s not home so its definitely not her. plus the name of the client is something weird.
how would they get in my network?
and how can i beef up my security?
keep in mind my sister is the one that set up her own card into the network so im not sure how to make changes on her end but at least let me know how to make the necessary changes on the router end.
i know i probably have to change the security mode? its disabled right now………..eh…. i know
Answer #6
Login to your router trough your browser….See router user guide..Set a WPA encryption password…Give your sister the password when she can’t access the net..She only have to type in the password once…
Answer #7
secure it with something life WPA, dont do WEP, anyone can crack that in less than 2 minutes.
Answer #8
1- Go into your routers page (192.168.1.1 default)
2- Enter your username and password
3- Click the Wireless tab
4- Click the Wireless Security tab 5- Choose WPA Personal
6- Choose WPA Algorithims TKIP
7- Type in the password you want to user for someone to connect
8- Click Save Settings
If you do these changes on a laptop that’s connected wirelessly, then you will timeout and disconnect after you submit the changes. Just re-connect to the network and type in the new password.
Answer #9
when my sister gets home and tries to access internet will she have to enter password each time she logs on?
and since i have you here….sometimes when i go to look at status > dhcp clients i dont see anyone on there. even when i know for sure that im online and my sister is online the place that shows clients is just blank. any idea why that is? its kinda odd. if i check like 20 minutes later then it shows connected users. and if i check like an hour later it may or may not show the connected users. its weird.
thanks alot though. appreciate the info thus far
Answer #10
Yes, she will have to enter the password, but only one time, so make sure she doesn’t fuss
Sometimes the DHCP table won’t show anything. It’s just one of those things. Just refreh it a few times and it should show,
