what is the best method to convert music cd’s?

i would like to save all of my music cd’s to my pc. what is the best method to do this? what conversion software should i use? what format should i save in? i would prefer not to install a full featured product like nero or roxio just for this project. anyone have some recommendations for good job specific software?

if hard disk space is not an issue, rip it to FLAC, it would give you the best audio quality possible from your CDs
