What is an “Internal CPU Error”

August 26th, 2013

I just built a computer, something I’ve done several time’s and have never run into a problem before. But when building a computer for a friend today I got an error when trying to power it up the first time. The screen stayed black, and I had to read the error off the motherboard. It’s an ASRock 870 Extreme3 R2.0 motherboard, and it displayed error code “5A” which in the manual says “Internal CPU error”. Now I can’t figure out if this means the actual CPU I installed or the motherboards built in CPU. I’ve tried searching google, looking on the manufactures website, but I haven’t had any luck finding out what this means. If you have any idea what this error means and if there is a way to fix it, or just simply so I know what part (motherboard or CPU) I need to get replaced.
Computer Specs:
Power Supply: Corsair Builder Series CX500 V2 500W ATX12V v2.3
Motherboard: ASRock 870 Extreme3 R2.0 AM3+ AMD 870
CPU: AMD FX-4100 Zambezi 3.6GHz Socket AM3+ Quad-Core
Graphics Card: Asus EAH6570/DI/1GD3 Radeon HD 6570 1GB 128-bit DDR3
Memory: Kingston HyperX Blu 4GB DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
Hard drive: Western Digital WD5001AALS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3GB/s Internal Hard Drive
Thanks for your help!

Answer #1
u need Update your BIOS.
Answer #2
I don’t know how I can do that when I don’t even get to the bios screen. When I turn the computer on I get no picture, I had take the case off and look at the motherboard to get that error code.
Answer #3
You’ll need to use a CPU compatible with that motherboard, update the BIOS and then install the FX 4100. Though I’m not sure if an update supporting Bulldozer even exists for that motherboard. Just so that the socket matches doesn’t mean that they’re compatible. People say that they hate Intel for having so many sockets but when you actually think about it, Intel’s approach makes perfect sense.

how can he update the BIOS on a non-working PC !?
edit: took out incorrect info !
have you e-mailed ASRock support ?
have you tried resetting the BIOS with the “clear_cmos” jumper ?

My advice,If you actually have an older, supported CPU handy,Install it then update the BIOS,Otherwise,Just replace it
with another board and hope for the best (do check the CPU compatibility list first tho)

don't see your CPU on this list

It’s there:
AM3+ FX FD4100WMW4KGU(BE) 95W Bulldozer 3600MHz
Supported since BIOS vP1.50.

Ok yeah it looks like the BIOS has to be updated before it can use that CPU, that’s pretty stupid considering on newegg it’s advertised as being “8 core CPU ready (so the Zambezi class like I’m using)”. Guess I’ll have to take the CPU out of my computer, what a pain I’ll have to clean and re-apply thermal grease when I put it back. Thanks for the help, I’ll let you know how it goes.

Just for the record,You can get the BIOS updated using a boot cd,I could make you one with it if you want.
No need to install windows for it.

FYI: edited my last post to remove incorrect info
axeis, did you try the “reset_cmos” jumper after you had the CPU installed ?
