500 internal error for my new site

i just made a new site for my college and set up a forum for that and used install central to install phpbb but after successful installation i got this error The server encountered an unexpected condition which prevented it from fulfilling the request.
The script had an error or it did not produce any output. If there was an error, you should be able to see it in the error log.
then i tried installing wordpress in new directory and after successful installation i got same result what do i do … i have installed wordpress, phpbb before but i cant get this pls help
umm in ftp right click and click file permissions on the index.php and make sure its chmoded to 644. pm me if you need more help
i dont know about chmoded but permission of index.php have no 644
