Answer #7
To be honest – Anti-virus are not effective at all. Virus are cleaver designed which will trick the software without it knowing.
I will list the top 3 free and paid…
Paid:
1)Norton 2012
2)Kaspersky 2012
3)Eset Nod32
Free:
1) AVG 2012
2) Avast 2012
3) Microsoft Security Essentials
These tend to get top results in security testing.
Answer #8
Eh, I dislike Kaspersky, tries too hard to get your attention at unnecessary times. I like NOD32 because it runs in the background nicely and doesn’t use up a ton of resources. Have had no problems with it.

Common sense means doing all you can to surf safely online. That means picking right browser and plugins, and firewall and anti virus. Nothing else you can do, other than trying to be careful online.
Op has to remember once your online your never safe, and no firewall is totally secure or anti virus.

Answer #15
Kaspersky Internet Security 2012
Answer #16
Eset NOD32 Smart Security v5.0.95.0.
Low on resources, user-interactive firewall and good real-time scanner. Also gaining license keys from Ulisessoft’s NODLogin makes virus signature updates a lot easier than having to scout the net for valid codes.

Answer #22

All anti virus programs work the same way using definitions, Antivirus is NOT the only thing you need to worry about.
Have you changed the password on your router/switch, Do you have an ips, Do you have a network firewall with explicit deny enabled, do you install the latest updates for your programs and os within 24 hours.
Any of the above is just as important as your antivirus client.
Answer #23
5)Norton Internet security : Hangs a lot of memory and CPU usage!
4)AVG: Many false positive responses!
3)Kaspersky: Not very familiar interface and changes system settings without confirmation
2)NOD32: Not so bad!
1)Avast: Low memory and CPU usage, a lot of features, easy interface..And the best security ever!
Answer #24
Here is my opinion on antiviruses, if you care to read:
Antivirus is ripoff of your money and most important resources of your machine; Ive seen machines running slower for up to 50% because of antivirus crap.
Why is antivirus not safe:
*Imagine antivirus as a guy in front of nightclub with a list of names;
*Imagine that in this example he will not let in people from the list as they are killers
*Imagine killers that are not in that list (new ones) can go in and kill everyone
Now, what to do to be able to live without antivirus and keep all PC speed for your apz.
Simple:
1. Partition your hard drive
2. Install clean windows, all drivers and programs you use on 1st partitiion
3. Move “my documents” folder to 2nd partition
3. Use Norton Ghost (or any similar) and create image of your 1st partition while its clean of viruses
Once all that is done you can try any software you want and if you get infected you just restore your image and you are back in no time.
Restore will take from 4 to 15 min depending on machine.
I do it this way since 1998 and it works great for my PC, my wife’s laptop and two PC’s of my kids.
Note:
1.You will have to get used to save your work on “my documents” and not in desktop, because if you restore desktop files get wiped clean and my documents will not.
2. Do not save any programs on “my Documents” – use it for your personal work and pictures only that way you know its virus free.
Answer #25
My personal rank:
1. Common sense
2. Eset
3. Microsoft Security Essential
*Kaspersky and norton has noticeable gaming fps slow down, other else too much false positive and shitty.
*I am using XP without any virus protection for 1.5 years, and so far things went smooth.
