West Side Story – NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Art)

January 20th, 2020

Okay, so I’m applying for NIDA (the same place Russel Crowe went to for acting, but i’m going for the production side of it)
and we have to do a production project; building a model set, and a written account of the play sort of thing…
i really want to get in, and i need some help with the questions. I myself aren’t the best written type of person… i’m more hands on…
the text i’m choosing is West Side Story, and here are the questions they want answered…
1. Choice of play/musical/opera: Why have you chosen this play/musical/opera? Why is it important to you? Why will audiences want to see it?
2. Text: What are the ideas the playwright/ librettist is trying to express? What is the relevance of the play/musical/opera to contemporary Australian audiences?
3. Characters and Actors: What kind of people are the characters of the play/musical/opera? In what kind of world do they exist? If you had the complete freedom of choice, what actors would you cast in your production?
4. Design: How would you describe the imaginative world of the play/musical/opera? What is the location? What is the period of your production?
5. Costume, Sets and Props: What requirements are there in each of these areas?
6. Briefly outline how lighting and sound will contribute to your production. Prepare a list of the sound and light effects you would like and indicate when they occur in the production.
i was thinking of using Salma Hayek as Maria….
any help would be GREAT…. i can’t put pen to paper, so this is really hard for me…

Answer #1
anyone want to take a stab at this?
i don’t want like, full on essays, just some ideas…
like, for actors to play Riff, Tony, Officer Krupke, Lt. Schrank and Doc.
and anything else you feel could help me.
