VPN connections

February 7th, 2014

Hello. SO basically I am a college student and I live on campus. My school blocks p2p connections by default and most filesharing sites in general. So i thought that all I need to do is to vpn to a friends computer who lives off campus, which will route my traffic through their gateway. I tried this and set up the vpns correctly using windows, no 3rd party software, and was able to connect, but this just disabled the internet connection…..like I was still connected to my isp and vpn’d to my friends. Windows told me that I had internet connection and under the vpn it said i had no network access… So i am wondering if any of you smart people can provide me with some guidance on how to resolve this issue…if you know of any 3rd party software that would help in this matter, or help to solve the issue it would be greatly appreciated! (also when everything was all set up, and i attempted to load a webpage via google chrome, it told me there was a DNS error, if that helps anyone)

Can’t help without knowing how you set up the VPN,But for the record,It’s a bad idea,You’d be limited by his upload speed (which
is probably poor) and will only be able to use it when his PC is on of course,You’d be much better off getting a paid VPN to be honest.
Answer #2
add rule MASQUERADE to your friend vpn server. this will do.
if i’m right you cannot access internet but you can ping his lan ip pc. try.
Answer #3
@roberto would it truly be his upload speed limiting me? i would think that I would just use his gateway but still my connection.. do you have any suggestions on paid vpns?
@ndpratas yes that is true, I can only ping his pc, nothing else I do not have any outside internet access.. What do you mean by MASQUERADE rule? Sorry i have never done anything with vpn connections before this project
Answer #4
Just to clarify,I wasn’t saying that his upload speed is related to the issue,Just it’s a bad idea in general to use his connection as VPN
because of it,Don’t have any recommendations but I suggest you check the reviews on this site:
http://www.start-vpn.com/
Masquerading has no relevancy here as it’s only used on iptables (Linux firewall)

VPN4all is about the best I have used, but you may not be able to afford it being a student ?

This site is free at the moment (beta testing) fairly decent speeds – dunno how much longer it will be free ?

MR Roberto I’m sorry to say but you are wrong… Masquerade is always needed becouse as far as I know doesnt matter the software you use the protocol is IP and guess what masquerade is a IP rule…

I’m not wrong,You just misinterpreted my post,First I just wanna clarify that no one refers to port forwarding
as masquerading (that’s very oldschool),That term is more commonly used in iptables (linux firewall) to describe a rule that
that port forwards a virtual network adapter>physical which is commonly needed for PPTP/OpenVPN,My post was in response to you mentioning adding a masquerading rule on the server PC,This of course can only be done on a Linux OS (which is not used here),In iptables,The rules are per port/adapter,In windows firewalls however it’s very different,They’re per application and it can be granted
full access or partial (incoming/outgoing connections allowed for certain ports),That’s all I was saying,That the term
masquerading is not used in windows firewalls,The port is clearly already forwarded on the router and I doubt
the firewall is improperly configured (as that’s very hard to achieve on windows),It has to be related
to the way he set up’d the VPN,Either on the server side,Or on his end (client),But as I already pointed out,Using
a paid VPN is the much better (and faster) option and there’s no reason to look into this.

okay… thanks everyone for your efforts, and yes an online vpn service is probably the best way to go… but does anyone know what is wrong? I would still like to solve this problem…anyone have any ideas?

How do you except anyone to have “ideas” when you haven’t explained it in detail? You did not specify
how exactly you made the VPN nor how you configured it on your end.

i set it up as a standard VPN.. got his IP address, set it to automatic instead of PPTP/SSTP (etc) set the data encryption to optional then turned on IPv6… THEN on the “server” side it was set up in accordance with this guide
http://www.pcworld.com/article/210562/how_to_set_up_vpn_in_windows_7.html
as i said earlier I am able to connect, however it disables all network access and internet access

Use RealVPN,They’re currently in beta so free and got good speeds too:

Answer #15
The guy at Real-VPN said he will probably be charging $3-$4 per month when it comes out of Beta, however, you can only use the Dutch server for p2p.
They are also considering doing a combined package of the VPN and Real-Debrid service, he’s not mentioned prices as yet.
