so.. upgrade while keeping vista? by upgrading you replace the OS.. if you are talking about a fresh install just backup everything you need them do a full format.
Do you mean dual boot or a fresh install?

Well I guess a new install but wanted to keep all the insatlled drivers for the specific machine. Guess that cannot work when moving to Win XP or even 7 so guess will have to do a full new install and then gpo find all the missing stuff and then also need to re-install all the programs I already had. Now need to find all the CD’s and keys again. OUCH… Thinsg like AutoCad, Acrobat, MathCad, Office Enterprise etc. AHHHHH…. Such a pain, if only a simple upgrade would work which only updated the OS.
Oh wqell

Drivers are OS specific, that will never work!

I understand how much work it is to re-install. Why would you have waited 3 years to upgrade to 7? Thats 3 more years of work you have to do to restore your OS.
Downloading warez is quite painless on the other hand, its configuring the OS and your settings and tweaks that takes days, even weeks to do depending on how yo use your computer.

I would never upgrade my OS, its not recommend. Never do anything but a fresh install!
If for some silly reason you do want to upgrade, this will tell you everything you need to know.

PS: A little Google goes a long way!
I really did not wait 3 years but my Laptop which was windows Xp got screwed up wiuth a virus or trojan or something and the onloy way was to re-build it from the original sysytem that is hidden on the HD which was Vista. When I bought the machine they gave me a free upgfrade to XP but I cannot find that disk and the only thing left on the HD is the hidden original OS whihc was Vista.
you can upgrade windows vista to windows 7. but you cant windows vista to XP. yes XP screwed up with virus. Use Good AV, Malware.
