Very strange laptop behaviour with DVD Drive

August 5th, 2013

Hi
So I recently did a fresh install of XP and it was a success except for one issue with the DVD Drive – it didn’t show up on Device Manager or My Computer. I ran driver genius and downloaded & installed all the drivers – still not recognized.
It had power, and the drive sounded like it was reading stuff… but the laptop just didn’t recognize it at all. I tried all the methods online such as registry tweaks etc but nothing worked.
Now I’ve just installed Daemon tools lite, and my laptop’s DVD drive has suddenly shown up in Device Manager and My Computer, fully functional. (no it’s not the virtual drive, it’s the actual laptop DVD drive!)
Any idea what the hell is going on?!! I plan on selling this laptop and would prefer to find the root cause of this weird incident and fix it permanently.

Make and model of the laptop?
Have you tried going to the manufactures website and tried to grab the drivers from there? If any?

Am not qualified to advice on this. But … I found this:

I found that by typing “laptop not recognising dvd drive” on google. And it’s dated 2007. You did mention XP. so, you never know. If you wish you can go to google too and do the same.
Am sure there are people who can help you out here. My info is “as a last resort …”
For your info and if interested, there are enough training on/for laptop(s) (repaire, etc). Please go to Tutorials and simply type “laptop”.

Hi, the laptop is a HP 6910p.
I went to the HP website to get drivers but there are so many of them it just confused the hell out of me, so I used driver genius instead.
Here’s a link to the laptop’s driver page:

Where do I even start? Which one is for the DVD drive?!

Hello Tsenoh, I’ve also spent days typing “laptop not recognising dvd drive” into google and have read nearly every link on it.
Obviously it’s not a problem that needs the laptop to be opened and repaired etc. As you can see everything is working fine now that Daemon tools is installed.
And that link you gave me is where I got the idea to install Daemon tools in the first place! All those recommendations of opening up the laptop to check for loose screws and cables etc aren’t needed now that it’s working. It doesn’t seem to be a hardware problem… right?
But I’d still like to know what caused all this!!! Why does my laptop need Daemon tools for it to recognize my DVD Drive?!!
Also, the BIOS in my laptop is not very detailed at all, there are not many options to mess around with.

Yes. You are absolutely right. But i also mentioned “For your info and if interested”. No big deal.
I see you are half way there. Something tells me you can see this through. Like we all do.
Good luck!

But I’ve exhausted all google searches… there’s nothing left. This forum was my last resort to find some help.
