Using a laptop as an external screen

September 20th, 2021

Hi,
I’m looking for some idea for using my laptop as an external screen. I can not afford to use a screen next to my laptop (space management), so using a video capture card such as a USB capture card would be usefull. But which ones are the best (EZcap?) or are there any other tricks?
Thanks for the responses!

If you want to display the old TV style analogue composite video then an EZcap should be good!

I found this one from the link above, but very unclear (usage), see:

Do you know which cables I need if the PC has only a standard VGA output? How can I input the VGA to an AZcap which only uses the rbg cables? I think it also uses another cable called ‘s-video’ (not sure).

The EZcap does not use the laptops output at all…
It plugs into a USB socket on the laptop and then you plug the A/V device into the EZcap..
Then using it’s software, you can display or capture what you are feeding in..
Remember, it is only good for A/V type inputs, not for VGA, DVI or HDMI !
The other thing you were looking at appears to be something that supports a stand alone LCD display.
Not suitable with a laptop…

Correct, I’m looking to use my laptop as a screen for desktop PC’s. They usually use VGA? So as a work-around I’m looking for VGA to RBG (or VGA to s-video since the EZcap also inputs s-video).
Do you maybe know something about HDMI sockets on laptops? Are they only HDMI out?

Here, just what you want….Except for the price…And this one is the cheap model!!

Hay, now here is something more reasonable that should work with the EZCap..

(And yeah, laptop hdmi sockets are out only)

lol thanks for the effort
I appreciate

The only real problem is that going to RCA/Svideo format will limit resolution to SD (720×480 or 720×576) as used by old TVs and DVDs..

Hey, that’s not really a problem, it’s just for system check up, software installation. Thanks again.

Hey man, just wondering, would it work with this one?
http://www.dx.com/p/vga-to-svideo-and-rca-f-cable-9812#.U0by7bR3u70
Or this for example:
http://www.dx.com/p/vga-to-tv-3rca-s-video-cable-10282#.U0bzhrR3u70
The following looks the same as above but there is no warning ‘only TV-out’…

Any thoughts?

All of them will just give a composite OUTPUT from a video card that has that function built in..
(No conversion, just connections)
