“tuneup backup” option appeared in boot menu

January 21st, 2020

i suddenly have a new entry in my boot menu that is labeled “tuneup backup”. i have a portable version of tuneup, but have not used it for months, so i have no idea where this came from. here is the boot.ini entry:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional (TuneUp Backup)" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /TUTag=VPUDLG-BAK
before i just delete this, can anyone shed some light on this mystery? how did it get there, and why?
thanks!

Answer #1
probably the portable launcher (and the person that wrote it) didnt realize that the program periodically checks that the entry is present in the boot.ini and adds it, and so didnt know to remove it after closing
Answer #2
well that sounds good in theory, but like i said, i have not used the app for months, and the entry just showed up yesterday, so it didn’t come from TuneUp. that’s what makes me so suspicious!

Its safe to remove (assuming you have another entry for XP), and isnt something to get too worried about
