best place to buy in uk in store or online ?
can’t help you there
Define best?! Do you mean:
– RPM?
– Warranty
– read and write speed?
– Noise level?
– Heat production?
– 500GB=500GB (instead of 470-480GB after format)
– which interface do you need?: USB, Firewire, eSATA…
– the cheapest?
– included software to make automatic backups?
– etc. etc. etc.
So many questions to answer by only you. Any reccomendation would be useless, untill you define “best”… “In general”: WesternDigital (new edition) is a good choice. http://www.wdmybook.com/en/editions/
But yet again, without more info, we can’t reccomend. At least I can’t.
seagate is the best.
Seagate Freeagent Desktop Drive
perhaps think about investing in firewire connection or better still a proper eSata connection too – only newer mobos have eSata ports and you would need to install a pci card otherwise, but if your intending on transferring masses of data (for me, masses would be 25gb +) then this will definitely p**s you off on a USB2 connection.
Seagate is definitely a popular brand.
Maplins, Dabs, Ebuyer – suggested UK retailers.
I know maplins occasionaly hold reduced prices on hard drives – but this changes store to store, and every few weeks.
Thanks for the advice everyone
But i have no clue about firewire and all that stuff
I just need a nice big external to store around 100+ of samples and 250gb of music
External HDD have a few connections types. USB (2.0) is the most common, but the slowest. Firewire is quicker, eSATA is the quickest. You can find more info on Wikipedia.
For most people USB is more then enough: transferring 1-2GB will hardly take 1 minute. No big deal. But if you have to transfer more then occasionally 50-100GB+ at once, then USB is very slow. Firewire and eSATA HDD are much faster, but unfortunately more expensive. Besides not every manufacturer include these types of cables. They cost only $10, but still… you have to pay for it. If you think you’ll need faster connectiontypes and its worth paying an extra $15-30+, then you should buy these (make sure your motherbord supports these types of connection; otherwise it would be useless to buy). If you don’t need them, just buy a HDD with a USB. Any good brand like Seagate, WesternDigital or LaCie with good warranty will do. Don’t buy any unknown brands. They are maybe cheaper, but most people buy an external HDD to backup their precious data… I don’t know about you, but I won’t trust any unknown brand my data.
