Ssd firmware update
July 28th, 2013
You cannot update the firmware via USB, it has to be directly connected to the pc.
so if he just puts the new ssd into his laptop he should be able to update the firmware then
he has to flash it from linux or as a secondary drive from windows.
it can’t be flashed if the drive is active/running windows.
how would he go about doing that he only has one space for his ssd cheers
How about connecting it as a secondary drive in a desktop PC ?
That should work..

He could just use a Linux Live CD, There’s loads of em.
Why on earth is he running it from an enclosure to begin with? Using an SSD as an external is just a waste.
he was only useing enclosure to see if he could update the firmware.cheers will use the linux cd
tried with the linux live cd but the firmware update tool does not install any idea were he/me is going wrong

Your kidding right? You provided no details whatsoever on what he was doing yet you want further suggestions?
It doesn’t work like that.

he has cloned his old hd on to a new ssd and has put it in his laptop because you cant update firmware from ssd while in use he used linux cd and ran the firmware update tool while on linux and the firmware update tool does not install.hope thats a bit more understandable.cheers
I did some checking, OCZ currently does not offer a Linux updater for the petrol series, And it’s also not possible
to update it when it’s running the OS & AHCI has to be used for the updater to work, Overall, Updating it from a
laptop would be a difficult task, Does your friend have a desktop he could use for this?

thanks for that, he does not have pc so he will have to sort that out then from some one with a pc.once again thanks.he said the ssd was running ok anyway but he just wanted to update firm ware to see if it run any better
As the old saying goes “If it ain’t broke, Don’t fix it” maybe he should just let it be.
And just so you know, It’s a destructive process, Updating the firmware will erase everything.

true
I had the same problem with an OCZ and a Corsair SSD, which are both sandforce based. For some reason the firmware update program wont find it if you have the Intel disk management driver installed (cant remember the exact name). You can just remove them and the drive will work just as good.
cheers he just found out that is ssd came with the latest firmware update but they need to have a update you can use from linux as roberto400 said you need a desktop to update.not many people have both
