[SOLVED] External HD won’t allow me to add files….
August 5th, 2016
Figured someone here might know the answer to this problem I’m having.
I have a 250gb External HD, that I’ve used for a while to store games and movies etc that I’ve downloaded.
Recently, It hasn’t been allowing me to add the larger 1gig+ files to it.
It says there isn’t enough space and give me the option of running a disk cleanup.
The thing is, It has over 30gb of free space.
Can anyone thing of a reason why it won’t allow me to add the larger files on it like it used to? even though it’ll let me add smaller music/tvshow files.
Thanks in advance.
Maybe it’s formated as fat32…Max size of file 4 GB…ntfs supports files larger than 4 GB…
I’ve just checked and it is FAT32, However the size of the files it’s not allowing were going from 1.8gb all the way to 11gb.
then re-format your external hdd, mate. don’t forget to choose ntfs which allow you to copy file larger than 4GB
I guess I shall, thank you very much for your help.
You don’t have top do a complete reformat. You can convert the drive to NTFS. Just type this into the command prompt or the run dialog box, assuming e:\ is your portable hard drive:
convert e: /FS:NTFS
Just make sure to close all programs that are accessing the drive while the conversion is taking place.
Ok, Will try that right now, but can I do this with all current files on the HD being safe? Thanks
I haven’t used it myself, but it should work without losing any of the files currently on the drive. If you have irreplaceable files on the hard drive, back it up just to be safe.
Well, Thanks for the advice, It looked like it was going to work, but kept saying my drive was Dirty, So in the end I sacrificed some files and reformatted it to NTFS and now it all works fine, Thank you
