(SOLVED) Can you partition a HDD that’s full?

August 5th, 2013

Hi,
My Samsung TV only recognises 2TB max via USB input.
Thing is, I just got a 3TB drive full of movies…
Can it be formatted to 1.5/1.5 or 2/1 etc so the TV will “see” it?
Cheers,
Pommy

Answer #1
It really needs a bit of breathing space and then Acronis Disk Director should do it..
Get rid of some files to another drive while you are partitioning …
Answer #2
I think that is not possible.
Answer #3
Do you have a flash-usb stick that you can test with? If yes then I’d suggest doing so..
If not, I can’t really give advice since I’ve always plugged my computer into my tv for movies..
If us know if it works
EDIT: To clarify, you’re not asking if you’ll lose data if you partition it that way, but if the TV will recognize the drives 2 different partitions
Answer #4
Not really, because if the harddrive is full there won’t be any space to partition it and also the HDD would be fragmented which means you can’t divide.
Answer #5
Back up your stuff first before you try dude.
Answer #6
Basically, NO.
You need between 2% and 5% minimum free contiguous (not fragmented) space to partition, AND if you have that amount it might take ages (hours) to partition. The partition program need to move data around, it needs free space to do that, and it ideally needs free space where the partition will be.
Does it not recognise the drive AT ALL, or only see the first 2TB?
You really will need to move some of the file to another drive, about 1/4 or 1/3 of the space filled, about 700mb, then you can partition relatively safely.
It will still take time with a drive that filled up..

Awesome help guys – it confimed my thoughts.
I’ll have to move 1TB and then delete from the 3TB and then resize
Happy New Year – and thanks!
