Question about VMware Player

August 12th, 2013

I plan on using VMware player to run Linux on my system, but I hear that having a Virtual Machine on your system can often make your computer run significantly slower, even when just running your host OS. Being somewhat of a n00b, what is the best way to optimize system performance through VMware player while running a VM like Linux? Also, are there any better alternatives to VMware player for running other OS’s?
Answer #1
Are you prepared to have a serious discussion about this matter? Because I’m not going to waste my time writing down a bunch of words unless I know you’re serious about this.

I use VMWare Workstation but I think the same applies to VMWare Player.
Install the VMWare program on your C:\ Drive
and install the VMWare Virtual Machines on another seperate drive.
In settings:
Set the Memory to “Recommended Memory”.
Set the Hard Disk space to recommended preallocated size and stored in a single file.
Defrag Virtual Disk For best performance:
1. Run a disk defragmentation utility inside the virtual machine.
2. Power off the virtual machine, then defragment its virtual disks from the virtual machine settings editor (VM > Settings). Select the virtual disk you want to defragment, then click Defragment.
3. Run a disk defragmentation utility on the host computer
