PS3 fans and cooling

July 31st, 2013

I’ve had my 80gb ‘fat’ PS3 for just over 4 years now, it has worked flawlessly until last week, it started freezing after 20 mins of gameplay. i vacuumed all the vents, and now it goes for about 2 hours before freezing.
I’m guessing its a overheating problem.
I’m thinking of buying one of these :

There are mixed reviews so I’m not sure weather this is the best option.
Is there anything else someone would recommend?
Thanks

No I would not recommend this AT ALL !!!!!
I had one for my Xbox 360 – can’t remember the makers.
The performance is TERRIBLE !!!
I ended up taking the whole thing apart, and looked inside – I literally could not believe how poorly built it was.
Look at other options of keeping your system cool !!!!!!

I don’t fancy taking it apart, because its not just mine.
By terrible performance do you mean low fan speeds?
What if I bought a standard desktop fan and pointed it towards the vents?, would it be a better solution?

A standard desktop fan sitting on the other side of the room would be 100000% better than that other product. Trust me.
Not just low fan speeds, VERY LOW fan speeds, it barely chucks anything out. 90% of the so called air coming from the fans hits the plastic casing first so there is barely any pressure at all.
Seriously though all joking aside, if you have the knowledge and tools avaliable to you to wire up a standard desktop fan to a 12v source then do it!! It would be much better.

the nyko intercooler ts is the best add on fan, that is if you can find one. it seems that they arent making them anymore. might check with some local stores to see if they have a pre-owned one laying around. i’ve had one on my 360 since day one and have had no problems.

I think the best option would be to upgrade to a PS3 Slim. They are less likely to freeze and the current PS3 you have (phat), will sooner rather than later develop the Yellow Light of Death problem, which happens because of overheating.
Answer #6
Thanks for the info guys, I will just use a desktop fan for now.
But I might get a slim one when my current one dies completely.

Switch to a 19 blade and install one of these:

I herd of people doing this……my fat boy has been a good one so far (knock on wood)
So my PS3 Fat 60gb (backwards compatible) system YLOD aka died on me after 5 years 2006-2011.

Going through Sony’s repairs service, I was given two options:

OPTION #1 – For $130 (+ tax s/h) to get my PS3 Fat repaired or “serviced” (or from what I read, possibly replaced with a refurbished PS3 Fat).

OPTION #2 – For just $100 (+ tax s/h) upgrade it to a “factory re-certified” PS3 Slim (whatever that means – refurbished I’m guessing).

Have a word with Sony and see what they say. Likewise, press on and force contact with a CEO. Success always occurs when you get acknowledgement from a CEO when progress isn’t made by the minions.

I didn’t take out any extra insurance on my ps3. Would that make a difference to sonys response?
