Recorded onto a SD Card, file size, date and time are displayed in properties, but no resolution or bitrate etc info
Answer #4
yes. go to staples and talk to them about data recovery. be warned that could it cost about a grand if they want to charge you that. i believe hitachi does also data backup recovery also
Answer #5
file type/extension ?
not all video codecs show file resolution or bitrate in explorer
what’s “mediainfo” say about it
http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en
try googling “sd card file recovery” and try some of those
or try “GetDataBack”
don’t think there’s much a “professional file recovery” company can do that you can’t with software
if the SD card is bad there’s really nothing you can do to revive it
so hope that it’s just file corruption
but if the card it’s self is bad you may be able to recover parts of the file
can you copy the file ?
the fact that it shows no file attributes might mean the index or header is bad
go to staples and talk to them about data recovery.
don’t think there’s much they can do that you can’t do with software
Answer #6
Question, Have you tried a different card reader? It’s quite possible it’s a problem with the reader
and not the card/file. Also, Another thing worth trying, Copy the file to your hard drive, Open up
command prompt and issue the following command:
chkdsk x: /r
x = drive letter of the card reader.
Do note that if your running Vista/Win7, You have to run command prompt as admin for this to work.
I could have a look if you want, I’d need the corrupted video+a working one (that was recorded
using the same camera/smartphone of course)

True, However, File recovery companies (software only) and data recovery companies (software+hardware knowledge, tools and spares) are two very different things, And data recovery companies may have some tricks up their sleeve, Who knows.

No point doing this, We’re talking about file corruption here, Not deleted files, There is a difference!

Agreed.

With mediainfo it is literally nothing, just the file name. It is a .MTS extension
I’ve tried Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery, but that wasn’t doing anything either, other than a few videos that I know all ready work
I’ll upload the files soon + a working one and see if you can do anything with it, I sure hope you can and if you do I’ll pay you for it
I’ve also just now emailed dataclinic to see what they say

Answer #9
Somethings not right here, The first (working) file is a video while the 2nd is an hjsplit part (001) of a 7z (7-zip) archive.
Answer #10
I had to compress the 2nd one
Infact it gets compressed from 1.4GB .. to 15MB
Answer #11
And split too, But where’s the rest of it?!? Surely there’s more than a single part!
Edit: Nevermind, I think I got it now.
Answer #12
When a was compressing it I selected it to divide into 100MB splits .. but obviously it never went over 100MB anyway
Answer #13
It’s probably a raw uncompressed AVI. Anyways, I’m not having any luck, I tried pasting a raw AVI header
from another file but that didn’t work. Do you have any other videos with similar file size? If so, It’d come handy.
Or if you don’t have any, See if you can record a new vid in uncompressed form.
Answer #14
I’m recording one now, the largest other than that is 700MB
Answer #15
I made some small progress using the header of the working file, It now plays with VLC but very choppy and unclear. I wasn’t able to re-compress it to the same extent (The file was still huge, Not sure why, Maybe things didn’t go well when you compressed it and it got even more corrupted, But that’s just a theory at the moment) anyways, instead of uploading it, I decided to take a different approach, Basically, You’ll have to apply the same changes I did:
1. Get WinHex:
http://depositfiles.com/files/ax5zu963i
No installation needed, Just extract the setup archive and run, Then use the keygen to register (but do change
the license type to pro as the other ones just don’t work)
2. Get the header I extracted from the working vid:
http://www.mediafire.com/?r4rzd3mpdw9dj4m
3. Drag both the corrupted video & header into WinHex, Each will now have it’s own tab for navigation, Get
into the header and select all (just press CTRL+A) then press CTRL+C to copy it to the clipboard, Now get into
the video, Make sure the position is set to the first character (Which is R, Should be highlighted in blue)
then paste (press CTRL+V), You’ll now be displayed a warning and you’ll only have a cancel button, But the OK
one is still there (just not very visible) simply click a little to the left and it’d get the job done, You might also
get 2 more warning a few moments later about a temp file being created & not being able to use the undo function, Just OK em both, When it’s all done, Save it and play with VLC.
That 700MB one might come handy, But can’t say for sure. Anyways, I’m waiting to see if the semi-fixed vid will play
better on your end to test my theory.

Here is the 1.2gb file, but it freezes, any large file seems to f-up, dunno if it’s any use to you
I’m gonna try your method, I’ll let you know how I get on, thanks alot for this
Answer #17
Just tried you method, and it is indeed really choppy, you can see picture (red seats and my hand) but it looks like it keeps looping over and over
Answer #18
The header from the 1.2 gig one didn’t help either (and was almost identical to the previous one), It’s still just
as bad as it was before. I googled for mts/hdmv repair too but didn’t find anything useful. Hope you’ll have better luck with dataclinic.
Manchesterutd.. replied: any large file seems to f-up
This may mean your camera is defective. Was it always like that with large files or it’s something that started
just recently? If I’m right, Your odds of successful recovery are very low as it’s quite possible
the footage ain’t there to begin with because it didn’t record all of it.
Answer #19
Ahh bolloxs, oh well, i appreciate the time/effort you spent trying to help, it’s actually the SD card I think, I saw it laying about in my house and think it’s a cheapo one
Because I put in a proper one (Sony) and it can record until the space is full and play it back perfectly
