EVERY RAR file I download is corrupt? Can anybody help?

August 7th, 2016

Has anyone had this before?
I am using XP SP3, IDM and of course WINRAR.
I have tried 20 different RAR’s from WBB, tried Flashget, tried another WINRAR version, a new copy of IDM, a fresh install of XP…
The only clue I have is small files like appz seem to be ok.. anything over 50MB and it’s shows corrupt!
I’m out of ideas?
So can the WBB community give me some help?
Cheers and goodnight from Australia – had enough for tonight!

I’ve copied the files on a flash drive to another PC and they are corrupt there too. I’m using XP as I bought that little mini laptop, the “Aspire One” and only since then have I had this problem…
Answer #3

Flashget not work anymore but u say u have problem with IDM.
Answer #4
I’ve tried the same download on another PC and it is not corrupt?!
I also tried a torrent and although it is not corrupt, it freezes every few minutes.
There must be someone on WBB who can help?
Answer #5
try downloading at a slower seed and see if it makes a difference
Answer #6
Torrent sucks anyway! Contact ur manufacturer
Answer #7
ok lol, i had the same issue but here is the solution that fixed it for me: download 1 file at a time…
don’t download more than 1 file at a time, if it’s in IDM then put 1 download instead of 4 (4 = default)
hope it helps
Answer #8
Thanks for the replies. – IDM is already set this way mate, and it also does it on a single link too.
.:sudarsan:. – I don’t think that they will help – but it’s a last resort option, thanks
Answer #9
if it comes to crunch time i say reinstall windows and do everything again…. might be just some setting you messed around with… just my opinion = )
Answer #10
You need to disable multi threaded downloadd (Don’t split files)
Answer #11
I think it’s due to your faulty memory. I’ve read somewhere that bad memory can cause corrupt rar files. I personally have never encountered this, but you can try to pull out a memory just to see if it helps

You know what.. I think you could be right!
The first thing I did to this laptop was upgrade the RAM…
Tricky job might I add.. its on the underside of the motherboard – it has to come out, the wireless card, keyboard, mouse pad…etc.
It has got to be that as I just did a fresh install AGAIN, and it’s the same.
I tried downloading without a download manager, just I.E and the files are STILL corrupt.
I don’t know HOW it can be the RAM? – but it’s the last option I guess…
Answer #13
can winzip open rar’s?
Answer #14
If you have a corrupt RAM then it seems logic that your downloads become corrupt. Before anything goes to your HDD, it is first stored in your RAM. So if your data becomes corrupted in your RAM, so will it be on your HDD.
Answer #15
I guess – but if RAM is faulty, surely it would have other effects apart from just when I download?
I’m going to put it back to the 512 RAM tomorrow as I think it has got to be the cause.
I’ll post back with the results.
Thanks to everyone who helped me out
Answer #16
If your RAM was not working properly then Windows woudln’t boot up
Answer #17

I thought that too – don’t they beep or something if it is faulty?
So do you have any ‘s before I strip it down again?
Cheers
Answer #18
if your computer is overclocked it’ll do that too, most times the pc will do most everything correctly, EXCEPT rar and unrar and zip and unzip files.. if it IS overclocked, try backing it down until you can rar a large file, and unrar it successfully…
Answer #19
can winzip open rar's?
nossir
Answer #20
It was the RAM – it works fine so far with a 1GB download – so a big thanks and goodbye to my annoying problem!

Answer #21
some motherboards are picky when it comes to ram, you might need a higher speed, premium ram, just to be sure it works… this way, you won’t have to return it if it don’t work..
Answer #22
“Premium RAM” ?
It’s Kingston – what is premium RAM?
Answer #23
"Premium RAM" ?
It's Kingston - what is premium RAM?
well, that would be a ram that is designed for overclockers, lower latency, matched sets, etc. you pay a premium for better specs.. but it raises your chances that you won’t have problems..
Answer #24
Hmm seems a lot of trouble just to upgrade the RAM for a small laptop – and overclocking definately won’t be happening!
Also I can’t have matched sets either – it has 512MB embedded and only one slot.
Thanks for the info though
Answer #25
yeah, some are like that, you’ll just have to use what works..
Answer #26
i’m also having this problem now, although it appears to only be with links that i’ve found on this site. Each attempt to un-rar brings up a “this file is either an unknown format or damaged” message. However different rar files work fine, just none from this site.

Now that IS strange!
Links on this site are also duplicated on other sites, so that has no bearing on it.
Have you changed anything recently – hardware OR software?
Try a system restore if you have tried some new software.
Answer #28
I just recently started having similar problems, every time I dl files a couple get corrupted then I have to re-dl them, and it is every time I dl rs links. A 6ooMB file turns into to a 1gb file after all the redownloading I have to redo. But works fine with ms links, so maybe it is my ram I installed about 6 months ago. any one else have more ideas would be appreciated.
Answer #29
Also ment to say sorry for asking help on your topic but I found some useful info I will try .

have you tried downloading them from your browser? if so, are the rars valid?
Answer #31

Answer #32
It won’t be IDM – I’d bet my last $ on it – I’ve used it for years.
And also you should be able to download as many links in one go as you like – not copy and paste each one?
Answer #33
I think its IDM. i doubt that, are you sure that the file you have downloaded is not corrupted?
Answer #34
can winzip open rar's?
Yes it can.
Answer #35
I love Flashget, have you tried any other Comp?
Answer #36
it’s possible an antivirus program or firewall installed on your computer is causing the problem, have you installed one of those recently? one way to check is to shut them down and see if that fixes the problem, just for the test.. if it does, then one of them should be changed…
Answer #37
Me too having the same prob
