Original Microsoft Xbox: How do I find compatible files?

January 28th, 2020

I have an original Xbox which has been softmodded and had its hard disk replaced with a compatible 500GB disk. My goal is to use it for parties and for to that end I’ve already converted my music video library to resolutions that will play without issues and copied over some music files. I am presently in the midst of copying over my known xvid movies and once that is done will comb through for compatible AVC files at lower bit rates which playback nicely and look good. I will also be trying to convert some of my larger 720p films into smaller resolution sizes at hopefully a good bitrate the xbox can cope with. That much I have in hand.
What I need is some way to help me comb through files going forward. I don’t mind redownloading movies if need be but I’m just not sure how to tell what will be good and what won’t before attempting to playback. That’s much more time and investment than I really want to spend on something intended to be setup mainly once, occasionally have new releases added to it and serve at family events and other like occasions. Does anyone know of anywhere (if the place is not here) where xbox friendly encodes can be found or which keywords I can use to discover them best with? I am aware that the scene as a whole moved on to larger MP4s and high resolution AVC h264 files, but surely there must be a few still encoding for the older devices! How can I find them?
Some stats:
Xbox will do 480p (720 x 480 DVD resolution) or 576i (1024 or 720 x 576 PAL telly resolution) at good bitrates encoded in H.262 (original mpeg2 DVD format), H.263 (divx/xvid) or H.264 (x264).
Xbox will do 720p (1280 x 720 HD) in H.263 at good bitrates and looks great, but can't manage H.264 - it's too computationally demanding for its processor unless it's encoded at very low bitrates, in which case the quality will be rubbish so it's not worth trying.

PS: Before the inevitable post comes advising me to give up already and just buy newer kit–what is there that not only suffices for good XBMC playback, but which also is as recognizable as the Xbox is into restricted places? My work place for instance has all sorts of regulations on hand for the bringing in of computers and “electronics” but has no issues with unconnected consoles like an Xbox or a PSIII for movies. An old console like the Xbox may not be the most powerful thing anymore but with a little love it has not yet seen its last day!

You really aren’t going to find movies being made today that have been specially encoded for a 15 year old Xbox. I soft modded my Xbox too with unleashedx. Look for avi files to download probably your best bet.. I really don’t use my Xbox for video I just burn games to DVDs off the isozone

I get your point, but I’m not looking for specially encoded versions of films–if need be I can do that myself although it would be time consuming. What I’m looking for is movies still encoded to the old scene standard xvid files in avi. As far as I can tell by researching the change over took place only two years ago and mostly in TV releases. See:

All of which matches my own recollection of getting movies from this very site in split 700mb files encoded in xvid\divX not even three years ago. Then suddenly as if overnight those all disappeared and were replaced by either MP4 or MKV encoded in AVC\h264. I just want to know if there are any groups or sites still releasing to that older standard (as of two years ago the scene standard) so I can search much more easily.
How are games on the xbox by the way, specifically coinops? I intend to go back later with whatever free space I have left and add some emulators (launchable through XBMC) but am not sure if it’s worth it or not. When I first got the xbox softmodded I added some emulators and it was difficult to sort through the roms. Supposedly coinops fixes this?
Thanks for the response.
