Optimal Sony Vegas Render Settings for Fraps Video
October 17th, 2013
I’ve tried almost every render tutorial out there, tried fiddling with the settings myself – I’ve tried the .wmv codec, .mp4, .avi, H264, Xvid, DivX, and nothing seems to be working like I would have hoped. I’ve tried recording at different resolutions so Vegas wouldn’t have to resize the video, and while it made a difference to record at 1280 x 720 by default, it was marginal and not quality-changing. I look around Youtube see people using these settings in render tutorials and come out with flawless quality, and I try them and come out with a suboptimal video. It might just be that I’m too critical of myself, but I seriously think I must be doing something incorrectly when I compare my video quality to others’.
TL;DR : What is/are the best render settings that you can possibly use for good Fraps video quality? I’m looking to upload commentaries, so raw gameplay encoded in something like VirtualDub won’t cut it.
Here is a short clip I rendered out for an example of what I end up getting when I try most render settings; some are marginally better, some are worse, but most are around this same quality, and the heavy pixelation is a real turn-off for me and I’m sure it would be to anyone who watches my videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLbun6Vmwg4
It’s not particularly terrible, but I get the impression from other Youtubers that it could be so much better.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, because I am really lost as to where my problem is.

GayTube sucks. They re-encode every all the videos you upload.
But if you want the HD option to be available from the quality selector, you must upload in a standard HD resolution. Either 1280×720 or 1920×1080.
PS: I use XSplit to do all my recording and broadcasting.

Yeah, I know that videos are re-encoded when you upload, but regardless, I see a lot of people on Youtube that use Fraps that are able to get really good quality, but I can’t seem to get it myself, and I’m looking for some help with optimal render settings to get the best quality out of my videos. I already render in 1280×720 (720p), so that’s not really the problem at hand. Look at the video example I posted in my original post and you can probably see where my quality problems lie.
As for XSplit, that’s not really for recording so much as it is for streaming. XSplit connects to a program you’re using to record and streams it to wherever your stream is located, so it’ll just end up being a roundabout method of recording my game.
