Network repeater doesn’t improve signal/DL speed

July 25th, 2016

Hey guys,
I hope you can help with the following problem.
I’ve bought a TP-link Network repeater, acces pointin one. (TP link TL-WA901ND). I’ve connected it with my NETGEAR router, but I don’t see any improvement in signal nor download speed.
I’ve had the repeater connected to the Router (Netgear) and configured it using the guide. Go to wireless settings, choose repeater settings, choose from the list the available access points and save.
So by doing that it should be correctly configured. So I went testing.
All following without the TPlink

    1m near the router(netgear), DL 2500kb/s/ signal 5/5
    1st floor, 1800kb/s signal 4/5
    2nd floor, 400 kb/s (1/4,5 of 1 floor down o.O) signal 2/2

When I enabled the wireless repeater at placed it at 1st floor. I went testing again. The results: NO improvement at all.
So guys, where have it could gone wrong?
Please help!
Thanks in advance!

A repeater is not designed to “improve” your connection, its meant to get your connection to where it should be if youre having issues due to attenuation.

What you mean with that? I just want to have a great signal at spots where I currently have a bad one.
By using this Repeater I thought I could improve the weak 2/5 signal to a 4/5 and also have the download speed be increased, like when I’m standing next to the router.

Take this example
A) Router
B) Repeater
C) You
A ——————- B —————— C
Even if you’re right next to the repeater the best signal you’re going to get from the repeater is the signal between A and B. Repeaters extend range by some amount doesn’t improve the signal like how you’re describing.
The only way to improve signal is to move the router closer to you or use a bridge

The TPlink is a Accesspoint and Repeater in one. Can The TP link be wireless connected with the Router as a Access point? Does this change anything, improve anything?
Answer #5
Can The TP link be wireless connected with the Router as a Access point?
No. If you can connect a wire from the router to the TPLink then do that and use it as an access point.

What is the difference between a AP and a Bridge with AP? I can”t seem to find any difference? :/
And Also.. I can’t seem to ping the Repeater (192.168.1.254) nor access the configuration page of it (192.168.1.254)
Does this mean it’s wrongly configured?
