Need urgent help choosing parts for Sandybridge rig

February 16th, 2014

I know this isn’t a good time to be buying a computer and all that, but my current one is failing (badly). I just got £310 from making a website for some guy, and that’s all I’m going to have for a few months since I’m 15 lol.
I’m starting some ICT course and I can’t go on with it with a crappy computer, so thats why I’m buying it… I’m not buying it for gaming or anything, just for multi-tasking and the very occasional game of call of duty or something.
The only CPU I’m going for is the Core i5 Sandybridge, since the AMD Phenom is a bit crap in benchmarks against the i5 without oc’ing it.
I’m not sure about all these chipsets and all that though, thats what I don’t know much about. Also, will a 400W psu work with a i5? I’m using most of the parts from my previous computer (400W psu, Ati HD 4670, Cpu cooler, fans).
So here are the parts I’m going to get:
– A new case (my old one is rubbish)
– A motherboard (Compatible with Intel Core i5 Sandybridge socket1155)
– Intel Core i5 Sandybridge
– RAM that is compatible with the mobo i’m getting
– A hard drive (probably getting the WD Caviar Black 750GB +64MB cache)
And that’s it I think…
Edit: Here are the parts I’ve chosen:

Answer #1
i think you should get a better power supply than 400 watt though for your i5 processor?? only my thoughts though
Answer #2
will a 400W psu work with a i5
Yes and probably will work better than the rig you had before.
Answer #3
Are you planning to use the CPU graphics? Then that PSU is enough. Only if you add a powerful gfx card, it might just on the border.
EDIT: Ah juist noticed tha bit aobut HD 4670. Since it’s a rather lowend card, 400W should be enough for it.
