Need help with stopping YouTube videos on random forums

January 26th, 2020

OK, let me explain.. because I imagine most of you are assuming I want to STOP YouTube videos from automatically playing on certain websites…. THAT IS NOT THE CASE!
I visit a few forums where people discuss movies and in some of the threads people create, say for instance, “Best Movie Scene”… well, once I open that thread my FireFox gets sooooooooo slow and then eventually something pops up about stopping or continuing loading “scripts”… and this ONLY happens if I go into a thread where people have posted tons of YouTube videos… while they don’t auto play, these forums have it set where all you need to do is paste the clips YouTube URL and that’s it… here.. I took a picture to help better explain my situation..

THAT is how YouTube links show up… they don’t auto play, but when people post more than 1 or 2 per thread, it damn near freezes my computer for a good 5 mins and eventually comes back with an error asking if I want to continue running scripts on this page… or whatever… but this happens because of all the damn videos people post and there is no way for me to know what to expect before opening a certain thread… So what can I do to NOT let every YouTube video show up like that? Is there some add-on for FireFox I can use? Like, the video would only show up if I click on it and decide it’s one I want to watch?
I hope SOMEONE can help me.. thanks a lot!

Try this:
1) type "about:config" in the address bar
2) go to the "media.webm.enabled" setting and
3) change it to "false" by simply doubleclicking it

Reverse it back to “true” if it doesn’t help.
Answer #2
Didn’t seem to work.. YouTube and all other videos show up still… I just wish there was a way for me to only see the title of the YouTube video that someone posted and if I’m interested in seeing it, I’d click on it and it’s open up or something, rather than every single video just popping up, whether I want to watch them or not.
Answer #3
how about trying chrome?
Answer #4
What “pops” up is really just a thumbnail of the video if you have the settings / extensions right There is no way just to get the title I know of. The best you can do is to just get the “thumbnail”
I will assume you are using html5 for Youtube. If so, grab the “stop tube html5” extension. It will stop anything further from loading than just the thumbnail.

I have used for a long time Flashblock in Firefox and it works for me, there homepage has the app for other platforms also
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/flashblock
Answer #6
It depends on what “mode” youtube is in: flash or html5.
Flashblock works on flash (duh lol) but it won’t stop html5. So if you don’t know or want to make sure, use both an html5 solution AND a flash one.
Answer #7
I beg to differ with you, maybe you should take a look at the app before you assume!

Answer #8
Nope:
The option is there but it doesn’t seem to work. Done on a clean install of FF so it’s not one of my other addons … maybe you have the webm disabled so youtube is forced back to flash?
Using youtube with html5 video enabled (not flash video), it did not work on the html5 video, but did work with youtube flash.
Answer #9
Whatever, it works for me and I was just recommending it, since I have to watch my BW because of a cap it is very effective for me.
But people are allowed to their own opinions.
You have a good day now

if you put this into your hosts file, it should work. 127.0.0.1  www.youtube.com
127.0.0.1  youtube.com
I put facebook in there too, since that’s also annoying.

thank you sir… THIS is the only thing that actually worked… it shows the YT box, but it’s blacked out with a little “F” in the middle that I can click on if I want to watch the video or not… I wish it’d show the title of the YT video, even tho it’s blacked out, just in case it is something I want to check out… until that exists, I’ll be using this addon.. thanks a lot man!
