Nas devices are fantastically slow, Avoid them like the plague;
Build your own network server using an atom board and a RAID card with 512mb of battery backed cache like the HP P800 which can be picked up for 80 bucks. Once its connected to your network you can access it wirelessly and if you need to add more drives just switch to a bigger case up to 20 drives no need to bin the lot.

I’ve never had any bad experiences with NAS being too slow myself. But it depends how much you pay and what you’re going to be doing I guess.
I think I paid about 40 for the following off eBay – just the enclosure. Sure it isn’t the best but at the same time, there’s nothing really to complain about. Perfect and easy for home use:

Depends on what speed we are talking about, If its over wireless or fast ethernet sure youll max that out in seconds but on gigabit good luck getting 100+MB/s hell ive seen 170MB/s on a teamed connection. Most consumer NAS’s crap out at 20MB/s
there’s also the rebuild and migrate speed to consider.

I’m not sure, if i can build my own. but if i were to buy a synology nas, could i get it wireless on wifi, if i buy a wifi bridge or a usb?
And ps. Thanks for your help, so far.

Pretty much every wireless router will let you access devices plugged into the lan ports on its wireless network. You don’t need any other hardware
Answer #6
To be fair, depending on how new your router is, some allow you to plug USB drives directly into it so you can access it over the network. I believe ours does.
