Connecting a Non-Wireless PC to a Wireless Ruoter?

August 23rd, 2013

So, my neighbour got this new laptop with wireless on it (duh) while his old PC has got no Wireless, i will still have to go with him on town and get a Wireless Router, but before i go my question is, can i connect his old non-wireless PC to the Wireless Router we will buy?
I was thinking i can connect it in this way:

The Internet slot on the Router would be taken because there would be another ethernet cable from the Modem, which he already has a Modem connection.
So, see where the LAN slots are, i was thinking i can connect a Ethernet cable on one of those and the other part of the cable connect it on his old PC? would that work?
I hope you understood what i meant, thank you.

It’d work just fine (Provided the modem is in the same room)

Yes, the Modem who he is already using will be on the same with the Router, i heard there needs a Access Point setuped for it to work? How would i do that?
Thank you for the fast reply.

No access point needed..Just get an Ethernet cable…Connect one end to the Router/Modem and the other end to your PC..
If the Network card driver is installed..It will all go well..

Before I give a simple how to,I’d like to point out that if your friend is on ADSL,He’d be better off getting an ADSL router and
not just a plain router,These have an integrated modem too so it’s an all-in-one solution.
Basic router setup
——————–
1. Connect the router to to the modem using Ethernet (To the ports labelled Internet or WAN)
2. Connect the router to the PC using one of the LAN slots.
3. determine the router’s IP address,Press Winkey+R>cmd>ipconfig /all,The Default gateway is the one your after.
4. Open your browser,Type that IP and hit enter to log onto it’s web interface,You’ll get a user/pass prompt,The default
login data is usually noted on it,But if not,You’ll just have to refer to the manual that came with it (If you didn’t get one on
paper,It can probably be found on the CD in PDF form)
5. Now you’ll have to define a few things,Firstly the connection,If it’s automated (doesn’t involve using a dialer) just pick
dynamic ip/automatic,If it needs to be dialed out (PPTP,L2TP or PPPOE) you’ll need to define it accordingly (If PPTP or L2TP,You
have to know the server’s address,Either check on the ISP’s website in advance or ask em on the phone) and of course
the username/password has to be inputted as well,Up next,You’ll need to enable wireless,Adjust the SSID (broadcast network name)
and enable encryption along with a password (Better use WPA2,AES too if available),Optionally,Change the router’s login password (To prevent
other house members from making modifications)
6. It’s all up and running now,You just have to pick the correct wireless network on the laptop and when you connect it’d
ask you for the password (which will be automatically saved for next time),You should also define it to be the default
network (that way it’d auto connect to it)
Edit: Almost forgot,You should also clone the mac address or change it to a random one (on the router of course),Some ISPs don’t like em full of 0’s.
