MKV File Help

January 24th, 2020

I cannot open a .mkv file. I have tried so many things, and nothing has helped. By the way, I have windows 7. If that matters. I have installed Windows 7 Codecs. I have installed Real media…I have tried Media Player Classic. I have installed Matroska Splitter but nothing seems to work. I don’t want to convert them to AVI and lose the quality…Nor do I want to play them on my Xbox. I have looked at other threads and none help. I would like some help on this situation.
Answer #1
try SMplayer here (if you dont know how to configure codec packs like CCCP and K-Lite on windows 7)

Answer #3
What exactly does it show when you try to open MKV files? Does an error pop up?
Answer #4
Yes. Says failed to render. Or on Windows Media Player, “Failed to find the path”. And, Ill try the SM an KM players now.
Answer #5
Ok so, smplayer. It opens. Changes the title to the file Im trying to open. And I just get a black screen. Same with KM. Help? D:

im not too familiar with windows 7 but i installed the other week windows 7 home premium and its 32-bit edition smplayer works well in it
are you using 64-bit edition of windows 7?
have you tried CCCP codec pack too?
are your video card drivers updated too?
Answer #7
MKV is just a container format, mate. Its just like an envelope. A codec (coder/decoder) is needed to play the video and audio streams within it. You’ll need a decoder corresponding to which encoder was used to encode the audio and video streams.
Try a codec pack and see if that does the trick.
I’d recommend K-Lite mega codec pack. It plays every format you throw at it with the exception of QuickTime (if you dont have QuickTime player installed). For playing QuickTIme files, you’ll need QTLite.
K-Lite Mega codec pack:

QT Lite:

K-Lite codec pack comes bundled with Media Player Classic – Home Cinema.

Just did. Still isn’t working. This is seriously pissing me off. Lol.
Answer #11
dont know if this would help but try this you already installed CCCP or Klite codec pack then go to media player classic home cinema press letter “o” on the keyboard go to “output” select all that says “system default” on the radio buttons if that doesnt help try selecting “overlay mixer” on “direct show video”
Answer #12
KMPlayer! I got an error finally. “No combination of filters could be found to render the stream. Error Num:80040218” Any ideas?
Answer #13
Are you sure your mkv files are not corrupt, I mean have you ever played them before ?

Answer #15
Man, you can’t play any mkv files, or just one in particular?
The thought that the file might be broken didn’t cross your mind?
If you have problems with all the mkv files, try this :
– un-install all the players and codecs you have now ;
– clean the registry entries using a dedicated software like “advanced system care” ;
– restart your PC ;
– install a fresh copy of “K-Lite mega codec pack” ;
– install a player of your choosing .
You should also give “GOM player” a try.
Answer #16
I got win 7 and i use zoomplayer for .mkv files and they play great.
Answer #17
I once had a problem with a .mkv file as well.
I installed the “Combined Community Codec Pack” and used the built-in version of Media Player Classic that came with it and the video played fine after that. Give it a try.
Answer #18
I personally havent tried. But im trying to play DeathNote eps. Everyone that was trying to use them said they worked…So I dont know what to do.
Answer #19
Use CCCP and play the files through Media Player Classic.

Answer #20
KMPlayer is my personal fav… but if you can’t get the file to play using the codecs/programs listed in this thread, it’s got to be corrupt? Or perhaps some seemingly unrelated problem with your computer.
Answer #21
Most of my videos are in MKV file format too. A couple of things I suggest you try.
First, get Shark007’s Codecs
http://shark007.net/win7codecs.html
If that doesn’t solve the problem, download and install the excellent Zoom Player I got here at W-BB:

I switched to it from KMPlayer and I’m very happy with it. It can play any media on earth, even DVD and Blu-ray. It sets it up so it downloads all the coldecs you need from their server. A most excellent media player.
