Laptop Charging Issue!

October 5th, 2013

Hi everyone,
My laptop has an LED on the side which glows whenever it’s plugged in. I can’t get this light to glow at all – it’s not registering that it’s plugged in. I’m not sure how to work out whether it’s the power socket on the laptop, the power adapter or the battery.
I’ve had a problem with the battery for ages. It wasn’t holding a full charge and Ubuntu suggested I replace it. But, the laptop ran fine off battery power until it ran out of charge, which makes me think either the power adapter or power socket on the motherboard might be the issue here.
I stripped the laptop down to the motherboard and there’s no visible signs of damage. It doesn’t feel abnormally loose from the outside, either.
Does anyone know how I can work out where the problem is? I don’t have enough money to spend on one thing, when another is the problem.
Help would be greatly appreciated here.

Do you know anyone with the same lappy so you can try their mains adaptor and/or battery, or vice versa ?
You could test the mains adapter with a multi-meter if you have one ?
Edit – at a rough guess, I would say the battery has bitten the dust. Sometimes the LED is an indicator that the battery is charging, not that there is power. Try removing the battery and plug it in – does the LED come on ?

Nope, and the laptop doesn’t start either.

Unfortunately not. The laptop I have is an HP Pavillion, which no one else seems to have.

I don’t have one, but I’m asking round now to see if anyone has one I could borrow! Hadn’t thought of this Thanks
