Internet Speed

That looks like about 1 MB/s…You should be getting more twice that speed…
24 mb will be connection speed…!!! and speedtest doesn’t gives accurate results always…!
your download must be 3MB per second..!!
be aware that ISPs usually advertise a particular speed, then in tiny print at the bottom they note that the advertised speed is actually the fastest possible speed, and that your actual speed may vary.

It all depends on where your connection point is, how far it is to the exchange.
you should definitely check everything is working ok
i mean, up to 24MB should be a minimum of at least 15MB, anything lower than that and there’s something wrong, if your line can only handle that speed; the ISP would only go up to 8MB.
There could be something wrong with your equipment
Still, you won’t be able to get those speeds unless you use multiple simultaneous connections, due to the way TCP/IP works. The speedtest could be using just a couple connections or even a single one to test your speed, the server could be slow or overloaded, there could be network congestion, your ISP could be lying to you or one of a thousand other things could cause your speed to be slower.
Try speed tests from different servers and websites to see if they give you the same answer.
Try loading up a download manager with a bunch of rapidshare links. Then try downloading them with at least 12 simultaneous connections and see what the downloading program says your speed is. Jdownloader will tell you the total speed of all downloads, however IDM does not and I’m not sure about the others.
You can also monitor the actual total network speed on your local machine with programs such as DU Meter.

that’s not necessarily true. i find that speedtest to be very accurate. i pay for 30mbit, speedtest shows me at 30mbit.

I didn’t say it was always true. I’m just trying to point out reasons why the OP may be getting a slow speed, not say that it is only a single thing causing the problem. Chances are there are multiple things going on that add on top of each other.
It may also be the efficiency of the server and the software that you are using to download that come into play as well. For example, downloading a file from a browser takes much longer than downloading it with a download manager like IDM, one of the reasons being that IDM uses multiple connections to download a single file, where a browser will generally use only a single connection per file.
What! im meant to be getting 3 times this speed ill definitely call them up.
but my equipment is perfect, can it be due to my computer being fairly old?

No im sure it’s 24mb
I have slower connection than yours..20 MBit connection…I can understand what other people are saying about variation…My download speed can vary between 2 MB to 2.5 MB…But anything bellow 2 MB unacceptable…
I was just on the phone to them, they told me the problem was the quality of my line which is provided by BT

that’s my 20mbit connection. what speed do u get if you donwload on rs premium ?

Ive found the problem after calling my ISP twice. They told me due my distance from BT my maximum download speed is 14mb. So should i change to the value pack with BE unlimited which is 8mb since there is not point of me paying for speed i cant get??
I’m having the same problem.
I switched my ISP and chose a 12Mpbs connection and when i go to speedtest is shows this :S

I feel like I’m being stolen or something
depends on prices & what you want. if you go for the 8Mbps packet you’ll probly get 6-7 according to speedtest.net, but in real maximums you’ll probly get a loss of 3-4 Mbps which is quite a lot if you ask me. so if that other packet is 40 euro instead of 50 (just using local prizes) I don’t really feel like giving up that much speed for the small reduction in price. also, keep in mind the cable/adsl network is subject to changes, you might be getting a better speed in a couple of months/years. if you want more accurate help on your choice you should post the prices of the two packets, the data limits(if there any in your country) & what you want to mainly use it for.
I haven’t read the topic, but let me explain one thing
1 byte = 8 bits.
If the commercial says Mbps and doesn’t say what the b stands for, it’s safe to assume they’re talking about bits. Because if they do that, they can promote bigger numbers.
Some companies are correct in their ads, but not many.

I agree this is the cause of some major confusion, but the speed test the OP posted lists the speed in megabits, the same units that the ISP quotes their speeds in. The small b is the clue there.
I am paying 24mb internet with Be unlimited. Is this download speed normal or is it meant to be 24.00mbs??
Yes it is a normal d/u load speed.
it changes with the distance to the main connection point.
I’m using 20mb internet but I have 12mb download and 0.85mb upload speed, same as you.

Wow. Your ISPs are ripping both of you off. If they have a package that is 10 or 12 megabits, you should seriously consider just getting that one instead, especially if it is substantially cheaper. Then again, with a 12 megabits package, you may end up only getting 6 megabit with that ISP .
At least my speed isn’t that far off. I am supposed to be getting 7 megabits, but it is actually consistently 6.2 megabits, which is close enough to assume that network overhead counts for the lost 0.8 megabits.
